Drivers side elec door lock will unlock but not lock?

Sorry for yet another question everyone.

On my 97 Explorer, I noticed my drivers side electric door lock will unlock all the doors, but will not lock all the doors when depressed.

Any ideas?

OK...sorry, I removed a few words in my search here & found info on it.

It seems that people are saying a wire breaks in the black barrel.

I will check into it.

Chances are that the electric locking motor is going bad on you. I had this same problem on my 97, and it was the locking motor. Replace it and your good to go.

My money would be on the wire. In your mind, it will seem very unlikely for that single wire to give everyone trouble, but for some reason or another, it does. Simply splicing it back together will do the trick.

I am guessing I have to remove the door panel to get to it?

It unlocks fine...it is just the locking part that does not function. Passenger side works perfect.

Removing the door panel isn't necessary to repair the wire. If you locate the "black barrel" in between where your door hinges are, you should be able to slip the rubber protective hose off and locate the wire there. It's a tight space, but I got it done in less than half an hour... 15 minutes of which I was sitting there just looking at it.

Do you know which is better to remove? The plug that enters the truck frame or the piece at the barrel with the wire tie around it?

On my 01 Sport I had the same trouble. The locking mech is bolted to the door and the bolt snapped on it. Was going to cost too much to have dealer fix so I drilled a little hole and put a screw in it. Fixed the problem for me

I checked it out today & just as you said...the wire snapped at the connector.

Added a new connector & problem solved!
