I just dropped my pan and found this little device. What's it for? It was just floating around in there. Was it supposed to be attached some where?

Thanks.

This thread should be a sticky... I just did the trans. fluid/filter and transfer case fluid in my 97 Mounty today (with 110K) I was thinking the transmission fluid was pretty clean so it must have been done before, but I guess not...

Hey--welcome back!!

Dropped pan, found this.

I had one of those in the transmission pan of a 1970 Mustang. I was told that it was a dipstick tube plug that the factory uses in the automatic transmissions, so it is nothing to worry about. I guess they are supposed to pull them out to install the dipstick tube, but apparently sometimes they must push them in to the pan. You can discard the part if you wish, it is not needed.

Ufo

that is the little throwaway tool the ford factory uses to guide the dipstick to the dipstick tube hole in the tranny, very usefull tool to keep,if you ever have to replace the dip stick,it also will work good as a plug for the dipstick hole when removing the dipstick to R&R the tranny. GM has a neat little one too..;)

its for fishing

its your spare bobber when u go out fishing an you get your line stuck up in a tree you know you v got a spare in your trk :D

I found that thing in mine also. At first I was like wtf and confused, but after some thought I realized it was to plug the dipstick hole. Somewhat convenient when the trans is sitting on the floor of the garage without a dipstick tube.

ran into this for the first time years ago on a ltd was just a kid at the time and ran all over trying to find out what it was

haha.... Good idea to have this stickied. When i did my first pan drop I freaked out, too. There might even be an old thread of mine with some photos.

its there from the assy. line, a lot of head scratching over that one!!
