Okay have yet to fool with a DIS and got a question. Okay I'm used to pulling number one up and dropping in the distributor a certain way (pointing at number 1) so how do I install this DIS shaft thingy. is it just drop and go or is there a special way to do it.

I know I probably could have searched for this longer but simply don't have the time. Any help greatly appreiciated!!

Thanks,

Gerald

BTW its a 97 2wd with a 5.0.

So know one can help me with this. I searched a lot on here last night and I still can't find anyting about dropping in the DIS shaft. Anyone??

You are searching for the wrong term. That shaft has nothing to do with ignition, as it times the fuel injectors. Ignition timing is controlled via the crank sensor.

What you are fooling with is the cam sensor, or, cam synch drive unit. It needs to be aligned with a tool. This adjustment is critical. Do not forget this also drives the oil pump.

Now that you know what to search for, you are set.

Eyeballing this is not good enough. No matter what anyone says, you need the tool.

True you may get it close, and the truck may run fine, even so well no codes are present. But if you are familiar with setting ignition timing by rotating a distributor, you know how just a bump can effect the timing. No way to eyeball this, you need a timing light.
The same holds true for the fuel injection timing.

If you have a mis timed fuel spray-it will cause piston burn . This may take a while--but will happen eventually.

Thank you sir for your response. After some more searching I did find that I was searching for the wrong term/terms. Now to try to find the tool locally.

Thanks again.

i find that most of the new sensors come with the alignment tool. so if you are replacing the cam syncro look in the box before you buy it.

My son had wrecked his 97 5.0 AWD and totalled it. I took the engine out and had put it in a 85 tbird. Well we bought a 97 explorer with a bad engine and well I have taken the cam synco thingy out and put a distributor in it. I dont need a new one. I just need to put this one back in after taking the distributor back out.
