I'm pretty sure that i need to replace my fuel pump. it takes up to 20 seconds some times for it to prime. does anyone have a walk through on how to drop a tank on a '95 xlt 4 door with pics preferably. this will be the first time doing this for me. also how much does a pump run? thanks in advance

unbolt the straps and loosen the clamps for the fuel fill and feed lines to the pump.
Run the tank empty first. Remove the skid plates and straps. Spray the bolts doen good the day before.

any idea how many bolts and such or is it fairly obvious when i get under there and am i just going to need a basic socket set or do i need speciality tools?

Long extension to get up to the bolts I believe there are 2 straps 4 bolts, and the plating should be obvious when you get under there.

Check out the Fuel pump section found in the Explorer Maint link in my sig.. Lots of good info there on a variety of topics. You can also search this site for many threads related to the fuel system.. Most notibly you should read the Fuel Filter Removal thread.. It has lots of pics and info on how to correctly use the fuel line disconnect tools...

I recommend getting a replacement tank strap before starting the job. They get pretty flimsy from being rusted.

Just a thought
