Guys I was wondereing about the feasibility of running a flowmaster deltaflow 50 dual oulet with both pipes exiting on the same side behind the right rear tire? Like the Lightning setup just behind the right rear tire. I have been looking for someone with that setup but I have not seen it yet. Will this work with the 97 V8 4dr XLT? Is this dangerous in any way? Do you think it will be too loud? Would I loose some torque with a stock engine? If the side is not a good idea what about exiting the dual tailpipes side be side in the rear? I do plan to add a tow-bar in the futre so clearance is an issue. Thanks for your replies.

There should not be any problem running the exhaust like you described. Talk to a local exhaust shop and describe what you have in mind and they will be able to tell you if and how much it would cost. As for loss of torque, if there is any it will be very unnoticable. In fact you may gain a slight amount over the stock exhaust.

Yep, you should gain power. You don't want to exit the exhast in the rear of any hatch or lift door vehicle. by design, they create a vacuum it tale of vehicle, bad weaterseals or doors ajarred could cause exhast to be drawen into your vehicle.

not to burst anyones bubble but my moms stock explorer 4.0 sohc 1996 xlt has the exhaust exit below the rear bumper strait back that would be underneath the liftgate/hatch

Explorer5.0,

Your exhaust idea will work well, I think. There should be no safety issues, as long as the system is installed properly with no leaks.

Too loud? That's a subjective question! I get the feeling you want it to sound louder and meaner than stock, or you wouldn't go to all the trouble of installing the Flo 50.

You're correct about the Lightning setup being very similar. There is a good article in Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords January, 2001 issue (page 202) of an exhaust upgrade on a Lightning. They installed Bassani equal length shorties, x-pipe, and dual Bassani mufflers, where both mufflers are vertically mounted side by side, and then both tailpipes exit in the stock location in front of the passenger side tire. Nice looking setup, good pictures to let you see how it would look. I wish I had a scanner so I could show you the pictures.

As long as you have a good, competent exhaust shop, you should have no trouble with the install.

removed resonator?

I noticed that in Explorer 5.0's profile it says that the resonator has been removed. Can anyone give me some info on this, sounds interesting. Thanks!

The stock exhaust system on my 97 V8 has one big muffler and right after the muffler outlet a small resonater/mini muffler that takes away all of the great 5.0 notes that the main muffler did not get. I think a resonater can be tuned to take out specific frequencys and let the rest pass unfiltered, thats why it's called a resonater and not a muffler. When I purchased the truck the resonater had a hole in it. So I had it removed and replaced the entire tailpipe with a manderal bent 2 1/4 pipe and a chrome tip. At the time I did not want to purchase a hiflo muffler so the technician suggested removing the resonater. I think that all the Explorers from 95-99 have this type of factory exhaust setup. It sounds great in my opinion. You know that there is a V8 under the hood. I have not heard a V8 X with a high perfomance muffler with a single out so I really have no reference point. There is a slight drone in the 50 - 60 mph range. To me it's macho music to my ears.

does the V6 have a resonator too? I looked at my pipe and didnt see anything past my muffler. I am kinda dissapointed. I thought my flowmaster would be even louder if I could remove the resonator.

Explorer 5.0,
I have a setup similar to what you have described, but it's on a 94 Sport. I have a single in/dual out Flowmaster 40 series Delta flow with both of the pipes coming out in front of the rear wheel (I'm not sure I would like how it would look coming out behind the wheel on a sport). I'm sure it would be possible to do on an XLT. My friend and I cut out a section of the ground effect in front of the wheel for a look similar to the Lightning's. Then he made up a heat shield and a skid plate for me and we put the heat sheild on and repainted the ground effect. Then had an exhaust shop put on the muffler (It had to be moved up a little closer to the cat than stock) and bend the pipes and put the SS tips on. Once that was finished, my friend installed the skid plate he made for me (In case anything bumpbed the pipes). In terms of noise, the Delta flow is a little more quiet than the regular 40, not sure how it compares to the 50. My whole truck is soundproofed, so I didn't noticed much change in exhaust volume inside. Outside though, it's noticeable. I'm not sure about performance changes on a V8 with this setup.

I think the SOHC V6 and the V8 have the resonater. Somebody correct me if I am wrong. I dont know about the OHV V6.

I have 99 Sport with SOHC V6 and it has a resonator.....

I have a '97 OHV, and it did not have a resonator.

Troll had his exhaust like that but it was too laud we had to change it. i would go with a difrent muffler out the side like that. you can see pics of the exhaust on trolls before and after. go to http://www.speedfreak.cc

I have a 97 E.B. AWD 5.0L with 2.5" exhaust from the cat back. It will sound like a mustang basicly when you get rid of the sotck muffler and the resonator. I get a exhaust drone at 2200 RPM which is about 55 mph cruise speed on the freeway. The Power difference in the modification really came when I added the SVO motor sport headers. (only people that I know make them for the 5.0L) Currently I have not done any more exhaust modifications to the vehicle. It's not that bad of a sound if you like the deep tone and sound of a v-8 under the hood.
