I'm planning on replacing the entire exhaust system this spring on my 4.0L SOHC 98' xlt, the whole thing is getting really rusy and the clamps are loosening..so i think it's time

But I was under the truck looking at the exhaust system and i was wondering if it was possible to have dual exhaust system on a 98'?

I think it is, i've seen other posts on here with the same thing but i was wondering where would you have it come out to two pipes? Would you need two Cat converts? Or could you put the Y in after the cat?

Does Dual exhaust system give more power to the engine than a single?

Sorry about all the questions...

Thanks for any help or advice

im no expert but ill give what i know. if you want duals it will have to be custom made. 4.0's like back pressure so larger pipes will rob your low-end power. as for the cats, i would just use a y-pipe to save energy and money. duals will be more for looks and sound on an explorer. Im thinking about a lightning-style exhaust with a flowmaster and stock-size piping. hope this helps

keep it a single 2.5" pipe. Your SOHC likes backpressure.

so my SOHC engine won't benefit from a larger exhaust pipe? hehe..i'm not an expert at all on exhaust systems but how does the SOHC work with the exhaust? I heard that the quieter and smaller the muffler is, the more resistance it has on the engine and gives less power but the 4.0L is different?

Thanks for the help

You want a quiet muffler, or at least I do :)

But anyways, on the backpressure, yes you need it. One time my muffler exploded (it was too rusted anyway) from the tailpipe being clogged with mud. Anyways, the whole deal pealed back half a foot or so of the muffler's body from which all of the exhaust was dumping out. Afterwards, I could feel that the vehicle didn't have as much "grunt" as it used to have (in addition to being annoyingly loud).

I got dual 40 series flows on my 01 sport

No offence, but you write the same thing in every exhaust thread LOL

Anyways, yes, your motor likes back pressure. Your truck is 2" stock so going 2.5" is going larger. Anything more than a single 2.5" pipe and you're going to lose low end power.

Yes, it is possible.

No more power, no better sound and no better gas mileage.

So if I go 2.5", would I be gaining anything? (power,gas,etc..)
