What is a better idea performance wise. A dual cat-back exhaust system or stay with the single. Ethier way I would use two Super 40 Series or One for the single set up.

I was just wondering with which I would get more torque and HP.

I have a SOHC 99 Sport.

Oh yeah and I would use 2.25 piping althe way through to keep the low end power.

I would go with a single 2.25" or 2.50" pipe to keep the low end torque

ahh who wants performance add a little red neck into your life and add some straight pipes haha go with single dude

So single will give me the most power and what if I did single in and dual out from the muffler would that cause any performance gains or loses

Dual out, more restriction, less H.P, but minimal, something you would never notice, just do it

that's what i wanna do...to me i'll take appearance over performance (i'm not a race car for god sake =) ) call me rice if u want (i did used to drive a mazda neways lol )

TJ
this would be way cool, run a catback pipe past the rear diff, Y the pipe and run 4 shorty muffs, dual out, you could run 8, 6 inch cans out the back, no ricer has ever done that, would be to die for:)

So performance wise what is the reason that single is better than dual for horsepower. I'm not an exhaust person so I do not know.

You have to have a certain amount of backpressure to get optimum performance.

Read all of the above, do what people that have had exhaust systems done, or go your way, will not make a hill of beans differance that you will notice

To get the best performance you need 2 basic things, sufficient air flow, and speed. You need to find a combination of of the 2, enough CFM to let the motor breathe, but not too much as to slow down the exhaust flow. To keep the exhaust at a high temp, a smaller pipe is good, the smaller pipe doesn't allow the exhaust to cool down as much, keeping the temp up, and the speed up. When the exhaust cools down, it slows down. The higher exhaust flow speeds are what give you the low end torque. But this limits the top end because the pipe is not large enough to flow the required CFM. But, if you have too much pipe, it cools the exhaust down too much and causes a drop off in low end torque. You need to find a pipe that flows just enough CFM for the top speed of the motor, but is small enough to keep the exhaust temps from dropping too much and reducing exhaust flow speed. The term backpressure is really kind of bogus, what they are referring to as backpressure is exhaust flow speed.

Dan- so in your opinion what would be an ideal tubing size?

My guess would be somewhere in the 2.25" to 2.5" range. I dont know the requirements for the motor, and the flow ratings of the cats and mufflers. On the SOHC, the 2.5" would probably be best, and 2.25" on the ohv, but either one would probably be a good choice. If your looking to do other mods, then 2.5" would probably be best. But I doubt you would notice much difference between the 2. The only way to be completely sure would be to use both tube sizes, and then some others and check them on the dyno under similar circumstances.

Alright got my system done. It's so custom it's rediculous. Aparently my stock system was dual in and single out. So I used one Super 40 Series muffler and did dual in and dual out. Shop had to fab two "y" pipes because the actual muffler was single in single out. Everything fints snug and tight and it sounds even better. I can also spin my tires on dry pavement. What that equals in hp I don't know. Oh yeah used 2.5 piping all the way through except for the "y" pipes at the muffler which are 3 inch pipes.

I keep reading that single is better for performance. Dual looks better.
