dual shock conversion?

you will have to buy the coilover shocks and springs, unless you get a set that come together, and get an upper hoop made as well as a lower mount made too. depending on the type of offroading you do you also might need an engine cage.

it sounds like a lot but it really isnt that bad. take a look at that rcd ranger lift and see how they use the coilover, you can get some ideas from there

well i dont jump it....its a weekend warrior, its my DD, and it sees SOME trails. Wouldnt a coilover be waaaaay to long for just a normal shock?

ok then you wont need an engine cage. a coilover might be too long if you put it in the stock shock mount but it wont be if you got a hoop made. that is part of the reason for making a hoop, so you can fit a coilover which is usually too long. i dont know how long the rcd one is but theirs bolts on to the stock upper hoop by using a bracket

so what advantages would going coilover present to me?

Well if you get an adjustable coilver, obviously it will allow for adjustability in ride height. Also a coilover will give you much better flex than a torsion bar will. The ride will almost certainly be better too.

but i still would be limited at 2 inches of lift correct? due to the CV angles?

okie dokie. i just wizzed through the thread and heres what i found. I HIGHLY doubt that u need a coilover shock unless u want the "bling bling" factor it gives. with a coilover u WOULD need custom hoops and mounts. logically, u would remove ur TBars, which are what hold ur truck up now. Thus, the hoops would need to be strong and braced across the engine to support the lateral load the shocks give. Do i think u need these in ur setup, no.

A resi shock. This probably wouldnt be to bad. White96X just got some 5150s on his that would be fine. u may need to have a hoop for these unless like Dave said, u get some with the pintop mount. By having the resi, which is holding nitrogen, the shocks will take longer to heat up, thus resulting in longer use before fade. if u do long trips, which consist more than crawling, like fire road or open dezert etc. these may be a good choice for u.

Agian, im still not sure what ur scene is, but this may help u out a bit. somemore info on ur background and budget would be beneficial also.

no desert here ;) i dont think i can afford coilovers...im on a college budget, but i can get the resi shocks for cheap. how much would it cost to have a hoop made, and what kind of fabrication or moving of other parts would be needed to go about this?

umm... it all depends on what size shock u get. im running a 10'' shock which is bigger than needed. all i had to do was remove my washer fluid resi and move my coolant resi. but i think that warrior products sells some little thing that has a pin top mount then a eye mount so u dont have to build one. but ur best bet would be to find a local fab shop and tell em what ur lookin to do. i would check out them 5150s too.

i was quoted at 300 for some new shock hoops and the lower mounts. they need to cut out the old shock mount. bend some tubes and weld them to the framerail and then weld on some lower mounts

Put some high quality replacement shocks on it, and call it a day.

You are playing around with ideas that will cost a good chunk of change, and not improve your vehicle much for what you are using it for.

well because i can get them for about the same as a regular shock...(connections ;) )

good enough purpose for me, now you just have to find one that fits
