I have a 98 Mountaineer, 5 liter. I have the KKM True Rev kit on order and I would like to do something to my exhaust to get more performance without spending too much money.

Does anyone have any experience with Dynomax? The gentleman at KKM suggested to install one of the Dynomax mufflers to pick up more performance. Should I go with just the muffler, or the cat-back set up?

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

I used to run a Dynomax, until I switched to a Flowmaster. I wanted duals, and a throatier sound. Both are good mufflers.

Ideally, you want to replace the entire exhaust system from the cats back, to see the biggest improvement in power and mileage. I don't know about the 5.0L, but the 4.0L came from the factory with a whimpy 2" pipe. I now run 2 1/2" from the cat to the tailpipe. Quite an improvement.

BTW, I have a slightly used Dynomax Race Magnum sitting in my garage if you are interested! ;)

Dynomax Super Turbos

Jeff, The best thing to do is to listen to different turbo mufflers and determine the sound that you like. The performance gains for the CAT bak systems are pretty much alike.
I am running Dynomax Super Turbos on my Ranger/5.0L for approx. 5 years now, they still have not rusted out and they sound deep and throaty. Quite while just cruising and louder while standing on it. I am building a project vehicle and Dynomax will be used for the exhaust.

Scott, Sorry but I think the FlowMasters sound like a rattling tin can. Thats why I like the Dynomax. BUT as I said, everyone likes what they like.

Have a good one.

Man thats the exact reason I like mine! I never accually thought about what they sounded like till you said this. But your right they do sound that way just more beefy then you might think at the same time. Course if I could I would run straight pipes but I tried that for about a month and couldn't stand it anymore so I gave up on that idea.

Dynomax exhaust

Bigham,

I too have had a Dynomax super turbo muffler for about 5 years, with no problems. I had a custom 2 1/2" mansdrel bent pipe made, to make it a cat-back. Sounds fine to me, Improves performance, but most important, it was the most economical of the high-flow mufflers and the lowest backpressure. I have found too many mufflers and other exhaust parts on the trails I run, to feel that buying a very expensive exhaust system for a serious 4X makes any sense. Often the exhaust gets sacrificed to the trail gods :)

Bigham,

I am also interest getting a cat-back for my V8. I dunno if Dynomax has a cat-back system for the V8. But am looking into the Explorer Express X-spec exhaust. They use dual Magna-Flow mufflers. I dunno how they got duals route underneath, which am very curious. I just seen one outlet from the factory location. I also like the sound of them using 3" piping all the way. Plus, its slightly louder than stock which is good if you don't want that excessive noise. Sorry guys!...I used to have the Flowmaster, sounds good but gets in the way with my stereo system cruising on highway trips..LOL!

I have the new "Delta" series from Flowmaster, which is supposed to not be as raspy as the original. Yes, it is louder than the Dynomax, but it sounds smoother. In the cab, it is quite except for 2400-2700 rpm - otherwise, it is not in the way of my stereo!

Yo, Dynomax does carry the SuperTurbo cat-back system for 5.0L Explorers. The off road shop in my neighborhood said it would cost around $279... i guess thats okay. what dynomax does not carry for the 5.0L is their Flo-Thru cat-back system. what the hell? Explorers are the best sellin SUV's in the friggin country! Why the heck dont you cater to all of us explorer owners?!?! STUPID world we all live in...

Hey HuiDaddy, check out jegs.com and look at part 289-17352. That is a Dynomax bolt-on exhaust system for $213. Think that is the same on your shop is quoting you? Let me know later what you decided (please include number and place) since I am looking for a cat-back system myself for a 98 5L 4x2. Other system I saw was the Borla system (14634 or 14795) for $445-487 from Summit. I really like the looks of the dual square (stainless?) tips.

From another postings...Anyone knows if the Borla Catback M-5200-FC for $250 from FordRacing will fit a 98 5L 4x2? If so, any problems installing it?

The Dynomax cat-back comes with 2.5" pipe, not 3". Good for V6, bad for V8. I was hoping they'd be making the 3", 'cause the 50 series Flowmaster is pretty obnoxious inside (sounds good outside, though!).

Pete
