I figured I'd post pictures of what I did since I haven't really seen anyone on here do it yet. Its very easy to do and allows for a much deeper sub than building a box to fit the location. Basically I used a 5/8" MDF board cut to fit the cargo area, screwed some clips to the back of the board ( i used about 10 because I like overkill ), put the board in place, turned the clips and tightened them. I also packed in some foam over the tire well to make it a bit more airtight. Only thing you have to deal with is a little vibration from the push-clips that hold the trucks side panel on, but I easily remedied that with a little padding behind them.

What I used (1 Image):

Hiding the amp in the opposite side is the next project (1 Image):

Let me know what you guys think. I'm not amplifying the speakers which I changed to Infinity Kappa 5x7s in the front and Infinity Reference 5x7s in the back. All I wanted the sub for was to fill in bass which it is doing very well. Its a 10" Infinity Kappa Perfect being run by a MTX amp. I came up with this idea to help fit the extra depth of the sub after I noticed most boxes only allowed 5" or less.

I dont see that being that efficient, there is no "box", but an open panel instead. I dont think I could stand something like that.

However, it does look good. And if it suits your tastes, then thats all that matters.

Infinite Baffle? seems like it wouldnt be sealed well enough or it would flex too much to work properly. Like white said though, if you like it, props to you :)

you underestimate how strong that plastic is, there is no flex even at high volumes :) As far as efficiency, keep in mind im not amplifying the speakers, but even if you wanted to, there are ways to seal that better than I did.

Don't think of it as having air leaks ....

Think of it as having a REALLY complex port system ...

I'd experiment with adding more damping material ... you could even 'go cheap' and use an old piece of 'eggcrate' foam they make mattress pads out of or even a scrap piece of fiberglass insulation ... if it helps then invest in some poly (although the eggcrate foam is really a good damping material I've used in slant stage monitors and guitar speaker cabs) if not pitch it and you are only out a little bit of time ...

For me it sounds perfect, and I know audio. I work at Circuit City (accomadations through infinity hence all infinity stuff) and I had a hell of a better system in my previous car and I'm just doing this because I bought the explorer to have space. I posted this as an idea for anyone who wanted to put a bigger 10" in than what most boxes allow.

"its ok i know car audio- i work at circuit city"

get a clue bro

is it an open air sub? becasue if it is, then that setup is fine....

I didnt say I knew audio because of CC, I said cc hence infinity. Learn grammar and notice the seperate sentances. Yes, the 10" kappa perfect can be used either way due to a removable insert. If you all really doubt me, I challenge you to let me know if you are ever in the Milwaukee area and listen to it. Like I said, it was posted for anyone who wanted an alternative for a deeper sub, and like I said, you can actually air tight that pretty well if you give it time and experimentation.

Looks good

As far as a stealth box is concerned it looks clean. Im sure as they said if it sounds good to yo thats all that matters. Also Im sure it sounds better than what would have been in there with a Mach system.... Im looking for something to add a little more to the system in my 99 EB and not to pick as it is for my wife.....lol

Cant remember who but someone already makes a slip in sub box for that cargo area.

lol nice. Yeah, it sounds clean and without the speakers ampd i dont have the amp all the way up for the sub as it gets plenty loud. I wanna know where alot of people think the air is leaking from, its not around the board, and if youve ever looked around the edge of the panel theres practically no space there (which even if there was you can fix that). I think its funny how people can say it doesnt sound good without hearing it *shrug* I will say if i ampd the speakers I'd need to get back to work dampening the inside of the area probably because I'd need it to be hella louder, but I'm not 16 anymore, I don't pound it like I am. One last time, this is merely an ideato be toyed with for anyone looking to do what I am without spending hundreds or the hassle of removing the panel and spending weeks planning and building a box that fits a sub half the size. Sounds great with the factory setup as far as I'm concerned. Oh, and I had heard this sub in a sealed box in my dads miata, to tell you all, it sounds no different mounted this way.

air leaks..... there practically is no space... well air doensnt need a lot of space to pass.... that panel is held on by plastic clips and screws, and not close togetehr at all... there is NO WAY THAT WILL OR CAN EVER BE AIRTIGHT

well, when i come to defend my in car entertainment award from this years milwaukee world of wheels next winter maybe i'll give it a listen. bet you my trophy it won't change my mind.

That is not a bet I am willing to take...I dont think anyone else should either

Nuttyopposum,

I would quit while you still have some dignity. By the way what does "accomadations from infinity" mean anyway? Did they put you up for the night in a hotel someplace?

Having worked in the Sony Electronics Customer Service Center, Mobile Electronics, Home Theater, and digital imaging departments, I cringe when I read your post.

I am not discounting your claim that you like the sound of your system, I do not doubt that you do. But what you are doing is akin to trying to talk a Rolls Royce driver into believing a Yugo is a much better buy, and that, my friend, is not going to happen here.

Unfortunately, your design is no more airtight than a a plastic cup sitting on a counter top, which I guess is, as long as there is no air movement. So, given that, as long as you don't power that sub, everything should be honky dory!

Later Dude!

Accomadations from inifinity means I get a hell of a deal buying equipment from them. As far as how it sounds, like I said, no amp'd speakers, this is just to fill in. I'm not saying it will pound like some setups. In my previous car I had 2 12" subs with a total of 1000 watts. I've listened to all sorts of pro installs etc, I'm not saying by any means that thats what this sounds like for christs sake. All this was was an idea for someone who wanted to just fill in a little extra bass without spending lots of money or wasting time. If I wanted to pound it like a 16 year old I wouldnt have done this. As far as that area being air tight. I don't know about your explorers but that panel is tight up against the car in mine, I have to get a tiny ass screw driver under it, then a bigger one, and even with a lot of power pulling up on it all I get is less than a 1/8" gap. Excuse me for attempting to contribute to the community for other people who just want to fill in bass easily. I still stand by that it does exactly what I need it to. You can have too much bass, properly tuned it just fills in. That also depends on what music you listen to. This is great for most, just not rap, but thats also because I'm running a 10" off of a 200 watt amp. Expo, deflate your head a little, I don't care about your trophy, I know how this sounds and it fills in just like I wanted it to. Hell lots of people around here that have heard it think it sounds correctly tuned, just the right amount of bass. Until you have something constructive to say, don't waste my time.
