My sons 1997 Eddie Bauer with the 5.0 has a check engine light. I don't remember the code but I know egr flow is the description. Can I just remove the EGR and clean out the ports where the EGR mounts. I would also probably change the EGR since it I have it off already. Should doing this take care of my problem? It worked on my Towncar. My mechanic suggested that the Intake plenum may have to come off. Too much money just to turn off the stupid check engine light. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

Do you have an egr tube on the passenger side exhaust header?
First--check the hoses going to the dpfe sensor--(if you have an egr tube on the passenger side header)-check them real good for holes. You will need to remove them to do this--
Second--do you have a ticking noise coming from the passenger side engine compartment. A crack in the exhaust header, or egr tube is very common.

Every explorer I have worked on with an EGR code the DPFE was the problem, not the valve itself.

I'm not sure if the 97 setup is the same as the 00 I worked on but if so PITA does not begin to describe how bad changing the DPFE is. It is mounted to the back of the engine and there is maybe an inch between it and the firewall.

Also OBD I troubleshoots the DPFE better than OBD II. The 2000 had a flow code, I took the DPFE off it and put it on my 95, computer immediately threw a DPFE voltage is/was out of range.
