EGR valve comes off the top of the ex. headers, then wraps back around with a metal pipe to the intake side of the engine, i have 4.0pushrod on 97, so its driver side, just above heat shield, tightens down with nut attached to the pipe. hope this helps some,
could always run up to autozone pick up EGR valve and a Haynes Repair manual, never hurts, i carry mine back of driver seat.

Hold on there!

Before changing the EGR valve itself, make sure that it is the problem. I just replaced the PFE on my 94 Explorer -- it was showing a 33 but the EGR valve worked OK when vacuum was applied to it. The voltage in the sensor was stuck at the low end (.35Vdc). I also had a rough idle when hot.

After replacing the PFE the Check Engine Light stayed off and the truck seems to drive better. The rough idle is gone.

How did I know to suspect the PFE? This board happened to have several threads on the subject when I was trying to figure out a similar problem on my FIRST 94 Explorer (may it rest in peace). Now that I've fixed the same problem on this one, I hope it doesn't go the same way as the first (I don't like changing parts just before totalling a truck).

If you ever find an EGR valve in a 92, tell me where it is. Could be a religious experience even getting a two digit code!

In Iran they stopped the caviar trade because the sturgeon had no scales and was an unclean fish. A major export, the economy suffered. So they called in the religious authorities. Low and behold, they finally found a scale on the fish and the trade was allowed to continue.

As Opera House is trying to say, a '92 4.0 didn't come with an EGR system.
Verify your interpretation of the computer codes, should be getting three digit codes. Maybe what you're calling '33' is really '111'.

So did the 94's come with and egr system? What about the 93's? Also what is a PFE?

I believe '93 was the first year for the EGR system on the 4.0. PFE is the sensor that tells the computer what the EGR valve is doing (Pressure Feedback EGR sensor?).
