My 91 XLT 4x4 (built in June 1990) does not have an EGR valve. Are you sure the 92 models has an EGR valve? And it might depend on whether it is a Calif. model or not. The Haynes Manual has description and pictures of the EGR system and components. One might look at the Ford Tech Service Bulletin listings for the 1992 Ford Explorer to see if there are any bulletins regarding the EGR for this years model. As you know, the EGR valve controls the flow of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. The Haynes Manual photo on page 6-26 shows the EGR valve but to be honest, it is not easy to describe where it is (on top of the engine, near the front). Need to have someone who has an EGR valve on their rig to provide a good description. By the way, my Ford 1991 Ranger/Explorer "Do-it-yourself Maintenance and Light Repair Manual" from Ford Publications via Helm Inc. (224 pages) does not mention anything about EGR for the 1991 year models.

I'm fiddling with an EGR (I think) vacuum line issue myself on my 1994.
Not sure about your '92, but on my '94, if it's what I think it is, the EGR valve is mounted on the side of the upper intake manifold on the driver's side - pretty much in the middle, right under the clips that secure the throttle and cruise control cables. You'll recognize it easiest by the pipe (about 5/8" dia.) that runs from the bottom of the EGR down to the exhaust pipe. This pipe runs right along side of your oil dipstick tube, and probably has a fiberglass cloth sleeve around it. The EGR has a large (3" or so) diaphram that looks like two small cup saucers mounted face-to-face.
BTW, if you have a chance, can you track down the vacuum line on the lower side of the diaphram (on the side facing the firewall), and tell me where that rascal goes? I just finished rebuilding the top-end of my motor and can't recall what connects to that fitting.
Mike,
You mentioned page 6-26 in the Haynes manual. My Haynes Manual only goes up to 6-12 and my manual does not even give any information about the EGR valve at all! What is the manual number for your manual so that I can get it and toss my worthless one away?!? I finally fixed my O2 sensors and now the EGR low voltage code is coming up. Anyone ever had this problem and how did you fix it?
Thanks,
Rick

My Haynes manual "Ford Explorer 1991 thru 1998 - All models, also includes Mazda Navajo and Mercury Mountaineer" has the number 36024 (2021) on the right hand upper corner of the cover page. on page 0-3 is has dates of 1991, 1992, 1993, 1998, and 1999 implying this version was published in 1999. I purchased it in about Sept. 1999.
By the way, you mentioned fixing the O2 sensors. Did you have a diagnostic indicating the sensors were not OK?
Lastly, I can FAX you a copy of page 6-26 of the Haynes manual but the 6 photos will probably not come through all that great.
