I thought that subject line would get someone's attention....

I have been on this site for some time, and have heard mixed reviews of which fans work, and which ones don't. We all know the BlackMagic fan works, as we've seen pics of it installed on aldive's X...

But I'm interested in something a little more 'reasonable' in price...like an OEM fan from a Taurus (92-94?) or the like.....

One person will say 'I pulled a fan from a ___________ and it wouldn't fit.'...then another person will say I am using that SAME fan in my X, and it was a straight forward install'...

That got me thinking. So I went on a parts site, and searched for replacement radiators for the X. I found 3 different units. 1 was for the MT (18" x 18 3/8" x 1", 1 row) another was for the AT, with 'Standard Cooling' (same dimensions as the MT)..and a 3rd one which was also AT, with HD cooling (18 x 18 3/8" x 2 1/4", 2 row)

I have a MT, so obviously I have the 1 row radiator. But is it possible that the contradiction in fitment is due to the difference in radiator thickness?

dont get the single row whatever you do

I've got a 99 SOHC and a 98 302, they use the same radiator as far as I can tell. There is only about 3.5" or so on each for fan clearance. The radiators of the 95-01 should all be over 20" long I believe, I'm not sure of the actual figure.

My used Volvo fan works fine, it's 16" and it needs to run very little. I want a better serviceable fan, like a Ford Taurus, Mark VIII, or something easier to get than a Volvo.

Measure the thickness of the motor, the basic distance from the back side of the fan motor, to the front fan blade shroud edge. The entire rest of the shroud can be cut up, gutted, etc. You only need the fan motor, blade, and the shroud which encloses those. The rest is simple to whittle away and epoxy to the factory Explorer shroud.

Honestly...I have the Stock Single Row Radiator, and for my 4.0L, it works PERFECTLY!.....it warms up fine, and my `stat hasn't hit the 'O' in NORMAL since I flushed the fluid almost 2 years ago.

When I go to a 5.0L, I will definitly get the 2 row...bit for now, I know I'm safe. (knocking on wood)
