My 1994 explorer is intermittently shutting off while idling or driving slow , but will usually start half an hour later. I had the fuel pump replaced , but ran into the same situation again. Had it in to mechanics and they could not find the source of the problem, and queried whether it might be electrical , sensors or something else. I also kept smelling gas in the drivers side recently .Mechanic said there was a loose hose or line and he tightened it. Drove home from mechanics with really no resolution , got the four miles to home no problem , shut it off and restarted no problem . Wondering if this has been heard of in the past and solution.

Having to wait before the engine will restart is normally a 'heat soak' problem. Heat is causing an electrical component to malfunction and when it cools off it starts working again.

Check your codes and see if that gives you a clue otherwise check the Ignition Control Module or possibly the Engine Control Unit.
