Emergency Brake Pads

The Explorer parking brake pads are not self adjusting, backing up while hitting the brake does nothing for them.

The inner rotor surface should be smooth generally, but they may be able to be turned. Do not let someone cut too much off from the surface, don't waste any money on a place that doesn't properly operate the machine. There is very little extra meat on any rotors on later cars. You must discuss that and the amount of metal that will be removed. Most places like parts stores that turn rotors or drums do not care to do it right. They make more money if they sell you new parts, so they want to cut the old ones down until they are not serviceable. You must actually talk with them about that before letting them have the parts.

I'd much rather have slightly pitted or blued rotors returned to me, than really slick and cleanly surfaced parts that cannot be used.

Seems like a lot of people call them parking brakes nowadays. When I saw how small my emergency/parking brake pads were, I hoped I didn't have an emergency. On my '96 and '03 X's, the factory had the e/park brake adjusted too tight (I think on purpose,) and I noticed the pads were totally gone when I did a rear brake job. Not to mention having to pound the crap out of the rear rotors to get them off. I had to shop the heck out of the brake pads because the prices varied widely. I lucked out with my '06 X......when I did the rear brakes the rotors came off easy and parking brake pads looked new! Wow!

If you ever actually use the parking brakes while driving, you will understand why they are not really emergency brakes. They do not stop the vehicle well, and not at all if they are not adjusted almost tight. They should drag slightly just after being adjusted. When the rotors turn the first time you drive it, any contact is eliminated, then it's as tight as it can get, and that is best.

They are best used for parking, especially on all inclines.

I replaced my wheel bearings and my pass. Side ebrake flew apart. So i left it out. Now my driver side is lightly dragging. So there comin out soon

i bought my 04 new and havent touched that parking brake peddle, nor do i ever plan on it.

If you knew what the parking brake pawl parts looked like inside of a trans, you would quit doing that. Those parts are not very strong, and a huge problem if they fail. use the parking brake on any hill, keep the stress off of the trans.

I understand what you are saying if you park on a hill.

Good suggestion about parking on a hill. We just moved, and our new driveway is sloped. I use my p brake occasionally anyway to keep the parts moving.

Where can I find out how to replace my rear passenger side brake?

One thing to keep in mind regarding your e brake. Use em or lose em. By that I mean if you don't keep that cable moving in the sheath, it will eventually rust up and seize, then if you thought the brake pads were expensive, you will find out different.

The pads are about $20 or so, use them as much as possible.

Is there a DIY to adjust the emergency/parking brake? Can you adjust the cable or do you have to adjust from the caliper? I will be repalcing the rear pads as well. I just bought an '02 Explorer XLT and I park it on a sloped driveway everyday. I want to keep the stress off the tranny and would like it to hold. Right now it is not tight enough to hold the car on the slope in neutral. Even when I push it to the floor.

Thanks.

You may want to remove the rear caliper/disk to check if the pads are still on the shoes. The emergency brake pads tend to leave the shoes in a pile of dust. You may need more than adjustment.

Welcome aboard! :salute:

the pitting of the drum part of the rear shoes for the ebrakes is lack of usage, it rusts over the years that nobody uses the ebrakes.

also breaks do not last forever, they should be changed yearly or bi yearly. that includes ebrakes. same as the 10 year old spare, should be change every 6-8 years or when you get new tires.

this is just something most common over looked due to lack of usage.

Not one mention of any noise coming from the rear when they are separated? How could this not make any noise?

My parking brake pads/shoes wear- I recently drove about 12 miles with the parking brake engaged. I have a steering column gauge pod that perfectly blocks the parking brake indicator light.

I doubt there would be much noise. The lining is pretty thin and brittle. They'd be pulverized in no time.
