Emergency brake.

so i recently failed inspection due to my emergency break not working 'what so ever' as the guy proclaimed.

how much do you think it would cost me to get fixed?
i believe its just a cable but i wanna know how much to expect to pay

By all means check the cable, is it still attached? Any slack, it should be tight? What happens when you press the parking brake, do you feel any resistance?

The brakes usually rust up from lack of use, big job considering you never use them. . .
i did mine myself, for $200 in parts, shoes, rotor, kit. . . took about 2-3 hours to do. you get new rears too. .
 






umm 90-200 bucks look for a coupon for XYZ brake shop specials

if you think its a cable.
park the car on flat level ground (don't want you getting run over)
and have someone operate the parking brake lever you'll see a ear move behind the brake rotor. back and forth on each rear wheel if both sides move your cable is fine.

if the cable is fine the brake SHOES inside the rotor have de-laminated (pad material fell off)

costs for this fix
50x2 bucks a rotor (assuming its rusted to beyond salvage)
50 dollars for a set of parking break shoes.
50 bucks for rear pads

so about 200 bucks if you do it your self or with shop special 200 for parts at most plus an hour of labor
 






Mine cost some time, but required no parts at all.

The parking brake shoes have a manual adjuster. As the shoes wear, you have to turn the adjuster wheel to spread the shoes. However, they don't wear much because the disc is not usually turning when you apply the parking brake.

I had no parking brake whatsoever. While replacing pads in the rear, I pulled off the rear discs and rotated the adjusters counter-clockwise (viewed from rear) with a screwdriver. I adjusted them until the shoes dragged a little and then backed off so that they do not drag. You can feel if they drag or not when you slide the rotor back on and pull it off again. Now I have a parking brake.

I just did the same. Solved the problem and was a free fix!
