Well, I dont know that it is gone....but it does not sound good. Here is what I know. Apparently my 95 XLT has been running great, and sounded fine in neutral and park...but in Reverse or drive it had a lil metalic noise. I guess it had been doing that for a week or two.

When my wife was driving home, the X just stopped going forward. She said the engine raced a couple times, then it just stopped. I came to get her, and crawled under the explorer, and there is badly burnt tranny fluid under the entire underside of the truck.

It had no reverse or any forward at all. once it cooled down, it will go into gear. while trying to figure out if it was some kind of slow leak or not, I put in 3 qts of fluid, and started it. No noticeable leaks while at an idle in park. when I put in drive and start moving it leaks out FAST.

This seams to me like it would be some kind of Tranny line? The loss of fluid anyways. but what about the noise that proceded the fluid loss? any idea? any suggestions? I am gonna get a chance to crawl under the truck ths weekend. where should I start?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Sorry, pump seal blew out

You have to drop the transmission to replace it and to do that job you need a special alignment tool for the pump if you do it yourself. Sounds like there is some other damage too.

u and me both

same thing just happened to me in my 91 4x4, ran good all weekend in the dunes. then on the way home it started dumping fluid all over...check my post somone may have some answers:confused:

hey have any of you ever heard of any problems with the 4r70w tranny? i hear it is pretty reliable but i am just trying to get a good basis for this.

Alot stronger than the A4LD and it's family of pieces of crap.

It's used in the 5.4L expeditions and F-150's too so it can't be that weak.

Oh yeah, and mike, that metallic noise was probably the catalytic converter heat shields rattling. How many miles is on the truck now?

105,000 miles

hte explorer has about 105,000 miles on it. about 30,000 came in the last year, all on the highway.

As for the pump seal blowing. If I do this myself, other than the special how hard of a job? If I have someone else do it....what should it cost? Any idea?

Thanks.

Fixing just the front pump seal will not cure your tranny. You will probably have to replace TOrque COnverter (if it got hot or warped causing damage to seal) and all your clutch packs and seals.

Good Luck

rocket 5979: The 4R70W (AODE-W) is a V8 transmission used in all fullsize applications from F-150's to Mustangs. It was behind the 5.0L V8, 4.6, 4.2, etc.
The transmission for the 5.4L triton is the 4R100 (Descendent of E40D/ C6......fullsize tuck tranny F-250-350)

Maybe you should have had it checked out when you first heard the sound. If you smelled burnt fluid and it completely stopped the trans may be shot. You may bolt the new parts in and have it die in a week. They don't like to be empty.

Check my post

over in GE - Earth Transmissions Are Easy, a takeoff on the Holloween movie classic for my story. Here is what you would need:
ATSG A4LD manual $16
Gasket and seal kit $27
New pump (optional) $110 or rebuild kit $30 though
doubt either is needed
Pump alignment tool if pump replaced $100
cluth plates about $25 if needed.

You can verify prices on bulkparts.com

It may be that pressure regulator stuck on the valve body or the seal just failed from heat. My seal was staked in with a chisel durring the 96 rebuild. I guess this is common to prevent them from popping out. TC $225 is always suspect. Generally sending back core TC just isn't worth it. A lot of work for $10 net.

I read the manual for 5 weeks before I started. There is a lot of information between the lines. Poorly written for the novice, it only makes sense when you take it apart. Blowup of parts is so small as to be useless for identification.

Disregard this post by me... I hit the wrong button :o

Bottom Line?

Alright, so when I get underneath of the vehicle, how will I know if it's the seal pump? Will the tranny need to be removed in order to diagnose??? Also, never had any estimates on costs...any ideas? I have got to get this thing moving again. Thanks!

If it is leaking

at the bellhousing area between the transmission and the engine it is either the front seal or (unlikely) a weld on the torque converter. Those are the only things there. If you haven't looked under there yet, other possible leaks are the pan and the tubes going to the cooler. Sometimes these rub together and wear a hole

Same thing

Same thing happed in my 95 Exploder today. coughed up the red blood... Looked like a huge smoke screen behind the truck. It would still drive and I pulled it into a parking lot to check it out and saw the fluid running out of the bell housing. I am thinking it's the pump seal.

Yet, before this happened I have been experiencing the tranny locking in 3rd gear. So I have to manually shift to 1st then back to drive.

I have two 4R44E/4R55E I have my old one that died from lack of oil change and this rebuild that had the 3rd gear issue and now explosive problem.

I am planning to rebuild one of the two or should I fix both at the same time.

I need to know more about this pump alignment tool. Is it hard to use and why is it nessary can't I align by eyeballing it?

Looks like I will be ordering all the parts from that bulkparts.com

Getting the Master Kit, TC, Band A4LD / 4R44E overdrive 4.0L only, Double Wrap,4R44E/4R55E Technical Manual,TransGo Shift Kits 4R44E / 55 Valve body & separator plate calibration & Clutch seal parts. So far...

Do you think I would need anything else? Also, someone said these trannys were good for 200,000 mile or more. So it was unlikely my clutch disks are even bad in my old tranny.

What do you think?

Thanks for any info.
