i went to have my x tested today but they told me the obd was not ready to be tested. i figured out why the previous day i installed a new cd player and had the batt disconnected. i did not know that would effect the test. anyways they told me i have to drive it and let the obd reset. how many miles do i have to run it? the emissions guy said to find out from ford. does anyone know this?

It's not too long. The same thing happened to me. Except I reset it on purpose. I would just drive it around for a few days and it should be good to go again. Make sure you take it out on the highway and get it up to speed and whatnot.

The OBD-II system has to go through all of its monitors and cycles - when you disconnected the battery for that long of a time you basically "killed" the computer, so when you reconnected it, it almost like a brand new computer. What your computer will do now is going through a re-learn, which it will read all of the measurements and adjust them for the best and most effective set up to get the best gas mileage. You will probably notice a little MPG loss during this relearn.

is there anything to indicate that the computer is ready? will the emissions place test a car that has the cel on?

Here in CA a CEL is an auto-failure.

i dont have the cel on now but it was on before i disconnected the batt, so i know it will come back on.

hey would disconnecting the battery to reset the computer be a good idea, say..after you put in a k&n cold air intake?

theres a lot of people on this forum that recommend resetting the computer after doing anything like installing performance mods or cleaning/ changing sensors. I guess it helps relearn anything that might have changed. I havent done it though after installing my cold air intake or changing my IAC and havent had any problems (I didnt know I was supposed to at the time), but i guess it is recommended.

hmm, well i installed it last summer and havent reset anything since then. would it even matter now? i may just do it anyway to see if it does anything.

when i needed to get my truck inspected/emission tested... i couldn't b/c i had disconnected the battery... i was told all u have to do is drive it and it will relearn it. i drove for over a month and a half hundreds of miles and went to get my truck inspected 4 times. it wouldn't relearn... there is a specific drive cycle u have to do to make it "ready" again. i got it from a mechanic. ford had not a clue what i needed to do. nobody else did for that matter. involves various cycles of this speed for this long in this gear without using your brakes no really hilly roads... couldn't jack it up and do it... etc... nothing else worked except this cycle i went through. thats what it took though.

Do a search and this is some of the information you will find.
