2016 Explorer XLT
Hi Folks,

Just bought a used 2016 Explorer XLT with approximately 39,000 miles on it about 2 weeks ago. Had two instances where the Engine Coolant Over Temperature warning came on. Both situations were after 30+ minutes of driving at approximately 75 MPH on hot days (90F-95F) at RPMs in the 2-3.5 range. Immediately let off the gas in both situations and the indicator came right down from H to mid range with minor fluctuations the remainder of the ride. Coolant is right within range and no sign of a leak on the garage floor. Anyone else encounter this situation? Any tips or insights are appreciated!

Thanks!

The proper thing to do is a complete cooling system check. Check your radiator for obstruction/damaged fins. Check that you have the proper coolant at the proper ratio of coolant to water. Pressure test the cap and system. If all that checks out, then move to thermostat and water pump.

What they said above. My first thoughts were thermostat.

Doesnt the 2016+ have the active shutters. If so, maybe they are stuck which is causing an overheat at high speeds.

I remember reading about a member which had a similar issue. He was instructed to replace the thermostat, and he found the thermostat in the housing to be upside down! The previous person who worked on it installed it incorrectly.
