engine cuts off and fuel gauge drops suddenly

2001 explorer v6 the problem is the engine will suddenly cut off, it always starts back (so far)but not always immediatley. One thing I have notices before it cut off is that the fuel gauge will bounce back and forth very quickly and then suddenly drop to the Empty mark and cut off. Most of the time it will start back up as soon as it come to a stop. I have also noticed that this mainly happens during turns. I'm thinking a bad connection some place or either a bad electrical plug. could the fuel sending unit be causing this by some how killing the connection to the fuel pump, is there a connector on top of the fuel tank?

I think you'll hafta run your tank near empty and drop it to get to the top o' the tank
