Well my moms 2002 explorer just pretty much died on her today while she was on the road. The vehicle has the V6 engine in it and I dont know much more besides it is stock, it does have somewhere around 50,000 miles on it. I haven't really gotten that much into the 3rd gens.

The problem is the thing starts fine but it idles like crap and wont go above 1500Rpms. It has absolutly no power at all. The wierd thing is there is no CEL on which has got me really confused. They had the thing taken to the dealer because I personly dont have the tools to diagnose the problem or I would of fixed it myself. I didnt really get a good chance to look at the engine before the tow truck came.

If anybody has any suggestions on what this problem could be I would greatly appreciate the input. I am just basicly trying to figure out what the problem is before the dealer figures it out. Thanks

sounds like a misfire......was it rainy/damp out when it happened???

Wont a misfire throw a P0300 series code?

Well it was raining out when this happened but like I said no CEL light at all and that is what has gotten me confused.

A clogged cat will cause a no power from the engine could be caused by oil leaking into exhaust

How would of oil of gotten into the exhaust though?

severe engine wear will cause the oil to blow right past the rings!

Yea but this engine only has 50,000 miles on it so i dought that it is blowing past the rings already and if it is then that is pretty bad. It isnt burning oil either and never has.

What does an engine need? Fuel, air, and spark. I might suspect a clogged fuel filter or bad ignition system (coils, wires, etc.).

Rumple

Well the dealer already figured it out. The catalytic converter fell apart and clogged the exhaust. I don't know why the thing fell apart at 50,000 miles. The repair was free though because they have a 8 year warrenty on them.

Wow, I was thinking fuel filter or maybe fuel pump. Wonder what happened to that cat to cause failure at 50K miles? That is unusual.

I have no clue and dealer will only say that it was clogged and they think it probably fell apart inside.
