Time to pull that engine COMPLETELY down. At the very least, the pan needs to come off and once in there, bearings would be on my short list. Oil pump screen, the list goes on...

Part of those pieces came from the outside of the screen in the housing. The metal piece appears to be the spring lining from a smaller tensioner guide.

I guess I'll separate the cast from the aluminum. I didn't want to have to unbolt the crank racing, but it seems to be part of the lower block assembly. What was ford thinking here :thumbdwn:

Timing assembly is coming apart. Strip the front of the engine and replace the chain, tensioners and guides. Its not that bad of a job to do, and most part stores lend the special tools out to make it easier. I fixed my expedition when it started making that noise, and it was time consuming, but not hard.

You got it! Just time consuming...

Figured I'd update this incase anyone is looking.

Ended up buy a replacement kit including the Oil Pump and water Pump off ebay, well I was smart enought to check the water pump before putting it on, it was cheap, and the housing wasnt even cast the hole way...

So anyways the chains are easy enough to install, the harmonic balancer, cam bolts, and driveplate bolts are all torque to yield.

Put the whole thing back together and got it all up, STILL GET THE NOISE. Not sure where I stand with it now. The chains were SO BAD I was sure it was them, didnt even bother checking the rod bearings or anything because my jackshaft tensioner came completely apart and I thought for sure thats what my noise was. Well its still there so it has to be rod knock or something. I even replaced the driveplate and the starter for ***** and jiggles.

I'm done with the truck at this point, Explorers are great and I dont think the 4.0 is a bad motor or hard to do the chains on, I am at this point done with the vehicle. I;ve just put to much effort and time in it to do any more. It's for sale locally and I picked up a Ford Ranger with 4.0.

Take it from me (and all the others that tried to warn me) check it all out while your in there, nothing is worse then the feeling I got when the noise was still there. I still have no check engine codes or loss of power ECT. Timing never jumped or anything its dead nuts on...

By the way the inside of this engine (beside the chains) looked brand new. So sludge no build up or carbon, it really was extremely clean. one of my chain guages must of ate a bearing main or something. IDK anymore

You have to replace the cam phasers, on the end of the camshafts.
