Timing chain? Seems like the wrong rpm range though...

Oil level is good?

Plug wire arcing can cause a tick.

Heat shield on cat or crossover can make noises which echo into the engine compartment.

Also, i had a rattle but it sounded a bit different... but the fix was easy so might want to check it out

Just brainstorming..

anyone know anything else? I was told it could be a valve spring tick, or idler pulley..

water pump bearing?

I use a length of flexible hose when attempting to locate a noise source. It works as well as the mechanic's stethoscope I purchased. If your serpentine belt is old, dried out and cracked it could be slipping. I thought I had a bad belt idler or tensioner but it was just a worn out belt. To determine if the noise is internal or external to the engine remove the belt and idle the engine for a very short time (less than a minute). If the noise persists then you know its internal. Other external possibilities besides the water pump and belt idler or tensioner are the power steering pump and alternator. Also check the harmonic balancer.

thanks man ill do that asap! appreciate the help.

Just a guess but did you check for a socket that may have been dropped in there sure sounds like something tapping against the ypipe... Maybe a rock got up in there.

Did you crawl underneath and see if you can rattle the heat shield on the ypipe? Do it when cold...
