Engine skip?

I have a 99 explorer XLT 4.0 with 72 k on it. While im cruising at a constant speed the engine will sometimes skip (does not happen all the time) , inside the car it feels like a hard shift but its not it just feels similiar any ideas? Thanks

Could be the auto 4x4 kicking in when it's not supposed to. Make sure all tires are same pressure and none are extremely worn out compared to others.

All the tires have the same wear and all the same pressure. But i did notice that it happens after the 4WD kicks in . Like when i back out of my driveway onto the icy street it will kick in then i will be cruising down a clear road and it will happen. So i'm thinking it has something to do with the auto 4wd too thanks for your help
