Engine swap? or keep stock?

a SOHC in a Gen I 4x4 would not leave alot of room for true duals
The SOHC into a Gen I truck is a TIGHT FIT, tighter then the 5.0L V8

Brett had to modify his Y pipe to fit the SOHC engine and his 94 truck, no stock part would work, there is not alot of room in there with a front driveshaft for true duals IMO

also true duals on a V6 naturally aspirated will normally lose you low end torque.
\My vote is stick with a single exhaust for a 4x4 truck, V6 or V8

... stick with a single exhaust for a 4x4 truck, V6 or V8
A small V8, not a big V8. A 2.25" single exhaust is plenty for the V6's and a stock 302. I agree, make it a V8 to keep the AC working better.

I just checked and the sohc v6 was rated at only ten less horse power than the 302 in late Explorers. But it does have around 50 fewer ftlbs of torque. Which is what really matters.

...and then there is the potential of both motors. :burnout:

The Max HP/Torque rating on the SOHC was slightly lower than the 5.0L, but the SOHC (in stock form for both) is a more efficient design, and all things being equal, the SOHC is faster than the 5.0L, and it will be faster using less gas!. But you don't go through the hassle of swapping in a 5.0L and keeping it stock!

Ditto, the transmission behind the SOHC has better gearing which gives it the advantage. Tweak the 302 a little and it will smoke any SOHC that doesn't have a turbocharger. The trans behind the 302 can be built to take double the power of a SOHC, it's much stronger.

once i get the new heads on and a few more tweeks ill be able to take a run on the dyno with my ohv Im sure my torque number will be way higher than power number since the turbo spools to full boost before peak torque and the tiny scroll will probally prevent the motor from achieving high power numbers. but it has torque and plenty. Im curious of how much

I TOTALLY disagree with this. You better have more than a "little" tweaks with a 302 XLT explorer before you try smoking a 4.0 SOHC sport with a turbo.

Jakee....don't get your boxers in a knot.....

I said "all things being equal", and he just said 'ditto'....

So there should be no disagreement from you....the Sport has a good 500 lbs or so on the 4Dr...and that weight is right smack dab in the middle of the car....horrible for weight transfer....

So I'll say it again....ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL, THE SOHC IS FASTER....

But with not much tweaking, the 5.0L can be made to be VERY fast, even in these overgrown grocery getters...

Turbo SOHC in a Sport vs. 5.0L w/ bolt-ons in a 4dr Explorer, isn't much of a contest...unless the driver has a REALLY bad day, the Sport SHOULD win hands down (how much money is in your Sport anyway?) and while it may be entertaining to watch for Explorer Geeks like us (Yeah, that's right. I called you geek!..LOL )...the Sport has a few things going for it that the 4 Dorr just doesn't. The Sport is lighter with a shorter wheel base....Now, if you guys were to trade motors...THEN race....That would be WAY more exciting!

I also put a SOHC engine and auto trans. in my '94, but am nowhere near done with it. The drivetrain is from a gen. 2 donor.

I hope others are learning from all of this. I chose a SOHC 99-01 truck for gas mileage, not needing any special power. If I'd known that the SOHC was larger around the AC, and the SOHC is no better than the 302 for low speed mileage, I would have bought a 302 truck. I could have dropped my 93 body onto the 302 chassis, and done what Ryan is about to with the dash. It would have been a lot of work, but my truck would still look like a 93 Limited( I liked it), and the 302 is more reliable.
