Engine Swap!

Paul,
Your gonna try to shove your 4.0 into a Samurai? How in the world will that thing fit? And do you really need all of the power? Ive seen Sams almost flip over backwards with just the stock engine and new gears.(on a decent size hill) My friend has 2 Sams, both FULLY caged! It is a must as i am sure you know. Those things are smaller than a J**p, almost the size of my Polaris ATV.
Best of luck with this project, I think the 4.0 into the Sam will be a bit harder than this 3.8 job that you are doing right now.

Hey Gigantor, I think I saw a Samuri in an issue of petersons a while ago with a chevy 350 engine in it

My friend has a Samurai with a 400ci SBC under the hood. It will be easier to put the 4.0L in a Sami than to put the 3.8L into the Explorer.

Hey Paul,

Excuse my ignorance, but what did the 4R70W come out of? Is that the Auto that came in the early model Explorers? If so how are you going to get it to match up to the 3.8L?

I am will get caught up at some point I promise.

Rick - The 4R70W is the AOD, which was the auto in the 90's thunderbirds, which is what paul took the 3.8L engine out of.

I am taking pictures as I go. I have a few developed already. I am using rolls of 12 so that I don't have to wait too long before developing them. I was going to post some on here but IMG code is not enabled on the Under the Hood board so I will be making a page on my web site in the next couple of days that I will update as the work progresses.

Paul, do you have any info on interchangeable Ford parts ie., books, websites, etc.?
Thanks for any replies.

Paul, I'll enable the image tags for this forum. I'm going to open them up for others as well.

Here are a few pictures from when Barry and I pulled the engine out.

The first one is with the hood, grille and headlights removed.

The next two are of me cutting off the rad support with a Sawzall(like a hot knife through butter). Dead Link Removed

This is Barry and I standing with the old engine transmission and transfer case on the hoist. It kinda reminds me of pictures of sport fishing! Dead Link Removed

This is the two engines together on the floor of my garage. The 4.0L is on the left and the 3.8L on the right.

I just picked up the 13-56 and tailhousing today. Dead Link Removed What a kick in the wallet! Dead Link Removed The guy I was supposed to buy it off had problems and couldn't sell it to me anymore so I had to buy one from the junk yard. It was way more money than I wanted to spend but I don't have much choice.

I have run into a few problems with the engine swap so I am going to have to put it on hold. Dead Link Removed There are clearance issues that need some custom fabrication and there is still the transmission tailshaft to do. But the main problem is that I am starting a new job soon and I have to give back my '98 so I need to have my '92 back on the road as my daily driver ASAP. I could rush the 3.8L and risk having it turn out badly but I would never be happy with that. Since I have not had any custom parts done yet, I am still able to put everything back to the way it was. As dissapointed as I am about the whole thing, this is the best way to do it. I will try again next winter but for now this project is shelved.

Technically Velveeta isn't REALLY cheese... it's a cheese food...
The stuff that other cheeses eat... I guess.

Sorry to hear that Paul, it looked like you were making good progress.

What were you going to have to do to make clearance?

The bottom pipe for the intercooler interferes with the steering box so I could not put the engine in in place with it on. I could still do it but it would take time and I don't have that luxury right now. In two weeks my '92 will become my way to get to work. As much as I'd like to finish this engine swap it is more important that I am able to get to work on time. Especially since it is a new job.
