welcome to EF! many swaps will pass for example a 96+ 5.0 if all emissions equipment is swapped. this is a cery broad question, as the limit is your budget so as long as the motor is out of a 96+ vehicle. what kind of power etc ya want out of it?

I mean, theres a lot of write ups for several kinds of swaps. I've seen 4bt swaps, 5.0s, I think a 4.6 too. Whether the first and the last one will pass emissions well or not, have no idea, though @Fix4Dirt is rights 5.0 is your best bet. Best if ya can get one straight from another '96 too, so that the wiring and connections are all more closely similar
