whenever it is below or near freezing in the morning when i start my car up there is a high pitch whine, sounds like a supercharger. this happens while in park warming up, while in neutral revving engine, and while in drive. what is this and why is it only happpen in the cold??

sounds like it is just normal... to me, it sounds like you are describing intake hum.... it may be related to vacuum and the colder more dense air.....

Might be a belt slipping a little. My g/f's car does the same thing. The belt material is cold, and therefore gets a little "hard", and doesn't get enough "grip" on the pullies untilit warms up.

thanks hopefully it'll stop when it gets warmer

Three things, two easy to replace.

1) Idler Pulley
2) Idler Tensioner
(both available at NAPA for under $60)

3) Water Pump

and/or fan clutch.. my 93 does the same thing.. when its cold, it whines(screeches) a bit until the motor warms up and then its fine. I dont know for sure what it is, but when I am changing out my radiator here in a few weeks, I will look into replacing whatever it is..
