1997 Ford Ranger XLT
Hi All,
HELP!!!!
I bought a 97 Ford Ranger in mid Feb (2013). I knew it had a few problems when I bought it. So I bought all the parts I needed and started to work.
Here is how things went over the past 2 weeks.

Parts list:
Clutch
Pressure plate
Throwout bearing
Pilot bearing
2 Motor mounts
Transmission mount
Fuel Tank filler tube
Spark Plugs
Exhaust gasket
Fuel Filter
Thermostat
New Battery cable teminals
Front Disc Brakes and Rotors (with Hub)

The transmission crossmember would not come off. The bolts would not come out. I used a C-Clamp for the ball joints and ended up pushing the inner bushing of the crossmember through the bracket. So after a few moments with my trusty 4 1/2 grinder and a thin cutting disc the crossmember was in pieces on the shop floor.

At this point I decided to do something easy and so I thought I would change the battery terminals. They were corroded on and had to be cut off. As I was prying with my screwdriver a chunk of the corrosion flipped off, hit my cheek then the inside of my glasses and into my eye. Result: Trip to ER to get the eye washed out, then off to the eye doctor.

The bolts on the rear u joint were on so tight that it took a 2 foot cheater bar on the breaker bar to get them to break loose.

The clutch line took an hour to get off.

I finally got the two top bolts on the tranny (about an hour task).

I had the tranny on the floor in about 6 hours.

I then replace the thermostat. I have to wonder why Ford put it back up in the cubby hole they did.

Then it is off to the brakes. Not too bad to to (I hope they work).

Then the fuel filter. WHAT a PAIN!!

Score: Ford - 3, Hank - 0.

I then put in the new Pilot bushing and the pressure plate, throwout bearing and clutch.

As I was trying to put the tranny back in my drop light fell off the frame and knocked one of my front caps out.

Score: Ford - 4, Hank - 0.

I finally got it all back together.

The moment of truth has arrive (about 2 hours ago).

The key turned, the engine cranked and sputtered, then kind of started.
It bucked and sputters then started but backfired and jumped around.

It will idle sometimes but not for very long.

Score Ford - 5, Hank - 0.

I did nothing to the engine I am aware of but it does not run.

HELP!!!
