I have searched and only really found cruise control problems that consist of it not working at all.

my cruise control will rev up and let off continuously, no matter the speed.

anyone have any solutions or suggestions?

Your cruise control unit is probably on its way out. On my V8, it's the little box on the passenger side with the wire that runs to the throttle body. I think you have an electronic throttle on your 05 and not a throttle cable like I have on my 03, though.

swapped out the control unit and still got the same erratic cruise control. any other ideas?

No ideas here, just more issues that need resolving. My issue is the cruise works....sometimes. At least once per day the cruise will not engage (doing more than 25mph/40kmh). It's like the "on" button doesn't work - if it does work, then everything else seems to work . Radio controls etc mostly work too, though I reckon the Vol+ didn't work yesterday until I hit some other buttons. Might be the clock spring, in both mine and the OP's??

That's how mine behaved when my clock spring was on its way out. Replaced it and all is well.

OK, Ta. Now....where do I get an explorer clock spring in Oz? Might be easier to find Toto.

Try a junkyard. It is overlooked in most cases when people are parting out. Just be prepared for it to be a PITA to get out. You'll need a T50 Torx bit to get the steering wheel off.

Take note, if you have A/C and radio controls on your ex you'll need to pull a clock spring from an ex that has the same. That was a HUGE headache when looking for a replacement for mine (I have them).
