Hey Guys,

Well I know eventually my tranny is going to go on my explorer, and I had considered doing a full engine, tranny swap with a 5.0l V8.

After a bunch of research I decided that just wasnt for me, so I have another question.

How many horses do you think i could get out of a N/A 4.0L OHV engine if I had it rebuilt with performance in mind, Think 200hp is doable?

Anyone care to venture a guess as to how much it might cost if taken to a shop, So far I havent had to do virtually anything to the engine so far.

Im nearing 150,000 on all original engine and tranny aside from normal maintnance and stuff, hoping it will keep going but preparing for the worst.

Thanks for your input.

Without going all out, most agree that around 230 HP is doable with a cam, forged pistons, head work, that sort of thing.

So yes 200 is very realistic.

Rathrer than a rebuild, have you considered a 4.0 SOHC?

Except for the NA, I'd say the problem witht he SOHC is the sparsity of engine mods. If it's going to be naturally aspirated then ithe SOHC shouldn't be a problem. If you want to supercharge at some point, go with the OHV. The parts are there and it's an older but more durable design.

Thanks for the info guys.

I don't want to go the SOHC route because again you end up dealing with more custom work and stuff. And I am NOT going to be the first to take on that project, hehe.

Anyway I already have a OHV so thats the way I might go if I end up deciding to do engine work. And if I ever want to go the Forced Induction route the OHV makes that pretty easy.

Anyway thanks for the links, anyone able to give an estimate on cost @ a shop for a rebuild up to around 200hp

If you order the parts from Vanir (pistons, heads, injectors, cam, etc...) you'll be at or over 200hp. Just factor the price of those components, and add in labor costs. If you do it yourself, then it's free. If not, then just ask a garage how long and how much a rebuild would be. Tell you will supply the parts.
