Your thoughts and Opinions on Building a 5.0

You can even use those to pull more lift and duration from the intake lobes, and less on the exhaust. Those could be used to balance the single pattern FMS cams that people keep buying. Night,

Jon, we spend too much time trying to explain these basics to younger enthusiasts. Too many of them think that the sound is connected to performance. They figure if they can match the sound that magically they can start racing Mustangs?

If that isint stereotypical, i dont know what is. If you were targeting me, where do you see in any of my posts that I say specifically "if i build a 5.0 from an explorer and put it in my ranger, its going to be loud and i can race mustangs with it" - ?

I know all about exhaust systems and how they work - i've experemented with 3 different ones on my ranger alone. My question dealt more towards the computer side (stang vs. explorer) not the exhaust itself (tubing/muffler, etc), but most ignored that and told me most things i already knew. I just wanted to see if anyone elese had the same thoughts as i did about the explorer sound.

Here is what I know-
I had a stock engine-with stock headers-x pipe and glasspacks. This wasn't to my liking so I purchased an Apten Chip-(this goes back a ways so hang in there)
This still didn't give me the sound-in fact the sound really only changed at WOT
Then I went to a dual in out Flowmaster muffler with dual exhaust. It sounded Terrible on the highway.
I then built my engine up-long story but when I started finaces were a bit different-and Torquemonsters were nothing more than a pipe dream of Roberts-although he had started to get serious shortly after.
The sound of the built engine-and stock manifolds with a flowmaster wasn't bad-but the highway speed (2200rpm) drone was just too much. Kind of embarassing actually-for a dialy driver vehicle.
Then I acquired the torquemonster headers-this helped to smooth the tones a bit-but actually the greatest benefit was the performance.
I now come to todays "ghetto attemp" in which I experimented with a HUGE dual in single out gm heavy duty truck muffler. This smoothed out the sound-

I follow you. In fact i've heard if exhaust systems have too much harsh rasp that headers will help smooth the sound out a bit.

Cats also asorb a TON of acustic energy, which plays a large role in determining the way an exhaust sounds. When the 5.0 goes in i'll defenitly run a set of high-flow's.

I like the way it works and sounds also--but dammmm, it hangs about 4-5" below my frame rails and is tucked up tight as possible--
