Darkfox: Do a Google search on "E-code headlights" and you'll find lots of information. Essentially, the reflector design is different than the U.S. (DOT) specification lights. E-code lights have better beam pattern, allowing safer, more efficient use of overwattage bulbs.
For older vehicles with sealed beams, it's easy to convert over to Hella, Marchal or Cibie E-code headlight assemblies which look like ordinary sealed beams. They're not ordinary, though - they use replaceable H4 halogen bulbs. For newer models with "aero" headlights, the swap is considerably more expensive.
What we need is a contact who works for a German auto salvage yard, Ja?
