Bought '97 Ex Automatic/ControlTrak 4WD with a slight noise in the front differential starting at about 10 MPH. It has 130K miles on it. Fluid was a tad low but looked new. The noise seems to be getting a bit worse. Noted that I can turn the front driveshaft about 10-15 degrees before all the slop is taken up in the gears. By comparison the rear diff has perhaps 5 degrees play. Apparently front has some gear wear. Questions are: Why would the front wear faster than the rear? How soon do I need to repair this before it is toast? Can it be done in the vehicle or does the differential need to be removed for repair?
