Removed the intake on my 4.0 flex (2004 Explorer) today to change the fuel rail pressure sensor and found what seems to be an excessive ammount of oil in the runners of the intake as well as the airways to the heads. Here are pictures. You can see where I've cleaned the left bank but not the right. The other picture is of the intake manifold itself. There is 145,000 mi on the truck. I can clean the runners as far back as I can reach but is there a way to clean the entire inside of the manifold? Also I found the line from the back of the valve cover to the intake but there appears to be no type of filtering device or pcv valve anywhere there. Is ther a way to stop this from happening in the future?

Any help or advise would be appreciated.

to clean out the intake you can use brake cleaner or carb cleaner and let it sit for a little bit the rinse it out with some warm water and let it fully dry and that should get most of the gunk out.
