Back to the original topic:

If the truck has been like this since you got it, you probably have leaking valve cover gaskets. I speak from the experience of owning a 2.9L Ranger which pretty much always leaked from the valve covers from about 40k miles until I sold it with 125k. I replaced the gaskets twice, but never solved the problem for more than a couple of months.
