Yes it is. If you go to Flowmastermufflers.com you can see the charts on each muffler and compare them. 40 original is going to be the loudest, and 70 series is going to be very mellow. The 50 is a nice muffler, I'll vouch for it.

Just putting my input here. I would personally recommend a 50 series over the 40 on the 4.0 SOHC. I had a '01 Ranger Edge with the 4.0 SOHC (same one that goes in the explorers). Anywho, I ended up putting on a Single In/Out (2.5") Flowmaster 50 (with Delta Flow).

The sound was nice but not too ricey. Mine was nice and quiet, but that was the Delta Flow (cancels noise out except more or less at full throttle). Also, this really ups the performance. I shaved 1/2 a second off my 1/4 mile times with the Exhaust.

BTW, what do 4.0 SOHC X's run in the 1/4? I'm just wondering because it seemed like my Ranger was running 1/2 a second to a 1 full second faster than any other 4.0 Auto Ranger Edge. I raced 3 in the 1/4 mile one day, all of them exactly like mine (except they both had upgraded ignition and Intake). And I beat one by about .65 of a second and another by 1.1 of a second (I was keeping up with stock mustangs all night long at the track). Just wondering, but definately Flowmaster is the way to go if you are looking for the sound.

A few mods could get the SOHC down to mid 15's, a few more low 15's/maybe high 14's. Gotta have the dough to really bring it down to 12's, or even 10's.

Ok, that's not too off. My Extended Cab (4 dr) was running 15.2's consistently with the Exhaust, a "Modded" air box, Superchip (and 31" Mud Terrains with the Stock 3.55 gears), hehe.

I kind of miss the old Ranger, but I definately think the X is a lot more plush vehicle, especially if you want to have more than 2 people with you, hehe.

talked to a couple guys last week and decided im not gonna go with the 50 series. Theres a v-force muffler the guy said is almost exactly like flowmasters. he said ur just payin more money fur a name with flowmaster. any way this is a dual in dual out (it only has one baffle which is like the 40 series) and chrome 3" tips. $325. sounded pretty good to me.
