I know this topic has been beat to death but I am about to order my exhaust and the sales guy confused me. What diameter pipe do I have going in to my exhaust ? and it is single in right? now the sales guy said if I have 2.25 going in then I have to get 2' going out I am planning on having dual pipes exiting.

He said they dont have 2.25 single in 2.25 dual out flowmaster?

Can someone give me a hand here, thanks, I phoned Ford and they dont even know.

Thanks

a million

Oh ya: 2000 sport, 2dr, standard,4.0 OHV

Purchase the muffler of your choice and take it to your local muffler/exhaust shop and have them bend you a custom piping system. This way it will definately fit and with welded joints, not leak.

Good luck.....

Yes I am, but what about the size going in shouldnt it be at least the same sice as the previous in on my stock muffler? and the out pipes should be the same ore smaller size than the in size?

thank you

The pipe in is "probably" 2.25 inches.

A custom shop can make all the needed connectors,

Why would you want smaller pipe going out?

My custom cat back is 2.5 inches and works great for me.

You got me I had everything all figured out then this sales guy just messed me all up saying that If I get a flowmaster 2.25 in then the only choice I have is a 2" out, seems dumb. So he says: "well you need back pressure", I know . so he says if you get 2.25 out now you have 4.5" of tubing letting out exhaust. which could be too much? arggh I said Ill phone you back.

All iwanted was either a 2.25 in or 2.5 in and and a 2,25 or 2,5 out. does that seem reasonable?

can you make a suggestion, like get 2,.25 in and out or 2.5 in and out

Thank you

J

Go to the local muffler shop and discuss this with them; it would be good to purchase the muffler from them too.

totally, let them deal with it

Thank you so much for your time Al

I would disagree with actually buying it from the muffler shop. Most of the time they just push a certain brand that they sell and will tell you that theirs is just as good or better no matter what muffler it is. I've seen some jacked up prices from them. You'd have to find a really good shop. Not saying they are ripping you off, but they have to make their own profit on the muffler.

Looking at the Flowmaster catalog in front of me, Flowmaster does make a 40 series with the 2.25" in and dual 2.25" outlet. Part #8424422. That's with a center inlet. If you wanted any of the other series, you'll have to settle for a dual 2" outlet.

Sure, you "may" pay a little more for the muffler at the exhaust shop, however, I have found that you will usually get the little extras thrown in. They should be able to get whatever muffler you want also. Ask.

once i found a muffler shop i could trust, i found the experience to be very good. we discussed the flowmaster 40, 50, and finally settled on the magnaflow. they were all the same price (they may have been having a sale). i had them cut out the stock exhaust right after the last cat, including the resonator. they bent the 2.25" tubing i wanted (2" stock) to match the orignal bends, fabricated and welded in hangars where necessary and gave me a discount on a 3" SS tip. all that in about an hour and they let me watch everything they were doing.

Well I phoned my mufller shop they will order me the flowmaster suv 50 series 2.25 in dual 2.25 out for 120.98 canadian. they did try and push the raven on me whatever, should I get them to remove my resonator or no?

Thanks Guys

Dump the resonator! No sense in keeping it, with all your new pipes it'll look like crap, plus you'll have duals too now.

If you want duals for looks, fine, however, you will get betterperformance ( power as well as gas milwage ) with a single 2.5 inch exhaust.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Al, you saved the best for last, I want both power and looks!!!

I dont care about mileage but I do care about torque, will there be a noticalbe diff between dual and single out?

if I will get noticable torque gains from a single out compared to a dual out I will go single out as I rather performance over looks.

thanks

I would recommend a single 2.5 inch for power as well as torque.

if the exhaust diameter is too large u will gain a little horsepower at the high end because of the better breathing but you will lose torque across the range due to lack of back-pressure.

i remember seeing this somewhere when i researched my exhaust. i can't find it but basically for a SINGLE-OUT setup:
4.0 ohv => 2.25"
4.0 sohc => 2.5"

i can't recommend a dual setup on a V6 but there are those who have done it. marc (aka draft) has dual flowmaster 40's on his 98' sport. u might want to check out his setup.

EDIT: definately dump the resonator... u just don't need it.

Just when you think you have it all figured out, I am slowly going back to the drawing board, so basically adding an extra pipe to my muffler could reduce my backpressure enough to noticably lose power and torque or keep it the same? Or as Al recommends I should go with a single out 2.5" . With this setup would I gain anything or just keep my current power and Torque settings?

Thanks everyone for their extremely helpful input I cant say how appreciative I am of this one on one help

you guys rock!!!!

I like my single out 50 series. I believe that if you're going for duals with your engine that 2" out is the way to go because that'll help keep more of the low end. It's all up to you though. Flowmaster has setup recommendations on their website for engine size and exhaust pipe sizes for different setups

were u planning on true duals (2 mufflers + H pipe) or a dual-out muffler? either way i believe 2" is the diameter u want to use on either dual setup for a V6. if u go single, as me an aldive have recommended i suggest a flowmaster 40 or magnaflow. i felt that the 50 series was a little on the soft side (even when u're getting on it pretty hard).

Edit: Link didn't work.

This is X24's old 50 series setup. Sounds good to me. Sounds like mine with the single out.
