Hi all, I am looking for a little help. I am installing a 5.0 out of a 88 Mustang into a 1936 Ford truck. The problem I am having is the front part of the engine where all the accesories are (alternator, p/s pump, a/c, etc.) is too wide. Someone told me that the setup in a 5.0 Explorer is more narrow. I am looking for someone that has one that would measure the widest area so I could see if it would work and start to look around for used brackets. Thanks

I have not taken a measurement but I could, the Explorer GT-40 5.0L V8 (96-2001) has a much smaller and shorter front dress then previous 302's, it also has a high volume water pump from the factory.

A buddy of mine put a 96 Explorer 5.0L and auto trans into a 60 something Ranchero and he ended up moving the engine and trans forward for clearance (shock towers) otherwise you end up with a ton of room in front of the engine, its so much shorter then the older belt style setups.
You may run into the same type of issue with your 63 truck, the alternator now is right in the shock tower and you have to move the engine and trans forward.

I can put you in touch with him, he is a member of this forum, though he doesnt post here much anymore (Ranchero & Mustang crazy)

Joe Dietz is his name, not sure what Ford you are working on, I can take some measurements off my spare drivetrain but it will take a few days (in storage).

I have several pics of the front timing cover, water pump, pullies and brackets in my 96 explorer refurbish thread:

Thanks for the info and pictures, that is a lot of help. The 36 Ford frontend is narrow, so that is what I am trying to work around and it looks like the explorer set up would fit. A measurement would be greatly appreciated, basically the outside dimension from the edge of the alternator to the edge of the a/c compressor would be great. What all would I have to change from my 88 Mustang motor to work with the Explorer set up? You mention a shorter and higher capacity waterpump, but do you also have to change the part of the engine it mounts to? Also I have seen some Explorer "elbows" listed on Ebay for the intake manifold to throttle body. I guess it was something Ford did to gain some clearance in the 5.0 Explorer, and I think it might help with my arrangement as well. Thanks for all the help, Greg

You might want to ask this over at www.fordbarn.com

Select the StreetRodder forum from the links at the top. There might be someone who has done this already.

If you look at a Ford racing catalog you can see the differences.

The timing cover is different, the damper is different, the waterpump mounts on top of the timing cover, then there are two brackets that bolt to the block, one holds the altenator, tensioner and idler pullies, the other another idler pulley, the ac compressor and power steering pump

The timing cover and front seal will work with 302 oil pans and blocks of all years I believe, the GT-40 also has a double roller timing chain, not sure if your Mustang block does or not.

In my thread (where those pics came from) there are more of all this stuff.
