Hello,
I was driving home from work tongiht and the explorer just died on the road. It started back up and was not running with a lot of power but then it acted normal for another mile or two. the fuel was at about 1/8 tank so I went and added 2 gallons to it to get me home. I got home and then got money to go fill it up. I filled it and was then driving to a friends house and it died again. I figured maybe water was in the fuel so I went to the store and put in 2 bottles of Heet. Started to drive again and not even out of th eparking lot it dies again. In the course of 2 miles it died 5 times until i finally gave up and just parked and called a tow truck. i get home and did a code scan and it returned that there were no codes stored. i am confused and don;t trust it now. I replaced the fuel filter around 70,000 miles. It now has 152,000 miles, but have never left me stranded. Any ideas??

The check engine light comes on once the engine start dying. In the parking lot i did turn on the key when it was really acting up and heard some noises sounded like from the dash and heard the pump running erratically, but i don;t know what exactly that means...my dad thought maybe clogged filter or bad fuel pump...i was hoping it was something that did not require dropping the tank...i will check the relays...where are they? in the dash or under hood?

It could be a faulty fuel pump relay--
Try swapping the relays around--the fuel pump relay is a small one.

I will try that in the morning and let you guys know. thanks

Switched the relays and the first time it started it died right away. If i turn the key to the on position i hear rapid clicking of the relay under the hood, and the fuel pump running erratically. the fuese under the hood all look good. If you cycle the key a few times it will start and drive a short distance then die. Any other things to check?

if it is the pump do i have to drop the tank?

NOOOOOOO!

It isn't that difficult to drop the tank--

You could make a cut in the floor to remove the pump if you don't want to drop the tank.

well, i yanked the fuel pump fuse and the relay keeps going crazy. i then pulled the PCM fuse and put it back in after that the anti-theft light flashes really fast but after a few minutes it started the theft light stayed on constantly for about 2 minutes, but it runs. drove it for about 3 miles, did some WOT some idle, runs good now. Only coughed once at first. i still do not trust it as i didn;t replace anything, but what gives? Fuel pump pressure switch sticking?

i got about 100 miles on it, then it acted up again tongiht. I recieved 2 codes stored in the comptuer, both reading P1299 - Manuf. Control - Fuel-air mixture

I seacrhed on the internet for this code and came up with "Cyl. Head temperature sensor reading engine overheat

The engine was just started 5 minutes prior so it could not have been overheating.

Its gotten way worse now. i can;t even get it restarted now. We just pushed it back to the garage and i disconnected the battery. we shall see what happens next
