ford explorer 99 xlt
A few months back, my explorer started making a banging noise. At first i panic think that it was the engine. Change the idle pulley, tensioner pulley and the belt. However, noise was still there. I increased the rpm to 1k and it seem to take it away but i could still feel that vibration and banging. Funny, one day it just went away, so i lower the rpm back to 600rpm. and everything was fine except for a few times that i will make right turns in the morning after no using the car all night and it felt as if the tranny slip. Well it happens twice on friday morning on my way to work. i went on lunch around 3pm and when to get something to eat. I got back t work and car was still fine. I get out at night and turn the car on and it make a noise, so i turn it off. Once again turn on, left the parking spot make a right and then a left. As i give it gas, the car will not go forward, i left it alone for a few seconds, hoping that it will grab but it didnt. i turn off the car and try to turn it on but engine didnt turn. I was able to hear the starter turning the flywheel but no the engine. I finally go a change to work on the car today. I was able to turn the engine by hand, so i know it is not seized and i remove the starter and turn the flywheel by hand but the engine did not turn. My brother in law assisted me to remove the transmission. While we were working on it. I was not able to remover the nuts from the flywheel to the torque converter because the flywheel keep on moving even though it was in P. After almost finishing and ready to remove the transmission the ONLY thing in the way were those nuts, so i went back to check and this time the flywheel was hard and will not move. so we put it in N and rotate the flywheel as we remove the nuts and it was also moving the engine. My Explorer which is a 1996 2WD Automatic XLT, I will continue working on it next saturday and sunday. Please if you may have experience this particular issue or may be familiar with it, please help me with your valuable knowledge. I was reading on the forums that it could had been something related to the flexplate and bolts. What is the Flexplate? Im sorry, i have a hard time with piston cars, Im more familiar with Rx7 Fc3s which is my other car but that is on works. Thank you.

Sounds like the flexplate broke. The flexplate is like the flywheel in a stick car. The torque converter bolts to the flexplate.

Last night I saw that it was the flex plate that was broken around the bolts
