Explorer Stance

I love the look of my Explorer but I hate the fact the the wheels are so far in and the wheel-wells/fender stick out so far.

I have seen some explorers on the site that have changed there stock rims and tires and have made their explorers look awesome. In my opinion like they should look when they are biult.

My question:

Is that the rim that makes up that difference, a thicker tire or a spacer of some sort ??

it could be spacers, rim offset, and spacers. any number of the combination of things. BTW i know what you mean!

If you stay stock height and you want to get them out a little more try some rims with a little more offset. If you search on spacers you will get a lot of feedback. Most people aren't too keen on them.

Spacers can be ok, depending on the type you get ...dont get the ones that just go between the wheel and the rotor/drum - those are cheap. The best type bolt on with the existing lugs, and have another set of lugs on them to mount the wheel to. These are expensive, but are a great solution. These kind of spacers are mainly for adapting trick wheels to a vehicle with a bolt pattern the wheel isnt available in.

I would say the easiest way to get the "stance" thing the way you want is ..tires. Some of the "base model" rigs have smaller tire/rim combos, so if you get the higher end wheels, along with the tires, it can make a huge difference- 255/70R16 tires are pretty nice and look alot better on an X than 225/75R15s. You can also just get some aftermarket wheels with the right offset and just fit some nice 31x10.5's or maybe even 32x11.5's and you'd be filling out the wheelwells pretty good- you'd probably need a lift for anything more.

Don't worry so much about trying to get the tires out to the same distance as the fender flares- youd have to get a lift or some wacky rims to make the tires go out that far. Wide tires or filling out the wheelwells can be beneficial both cosmetically and performance wise, but only to a point.

I think if you want to improve the look a bit, you could get 16" 2001 Explorer Sport rims/Sport trac rims. I got those fairly cheap on mine and I think they made a heck of a difference. It looks cool too because you don't really see them on the older explorers.
