Please help This Explorer needs to be running.

Is it throwing any codes? It may be a fuel delivery issue if it is sputtering. You could also check the spark plugs by removing each plug from the motor and grounding it to a grounding surface to see if a electrical arc forms when it cranks.

Idle

:exp: Mine had the same problem. It was corrected with the replacement of the IAC. I was told it was a common problem. It went at 45K.

IAC is a good place to start. I don't think it will necessarily throw a code if it is the IAC, but you should pull the codes as well.

IAC Code

I didn't get any codes when mine went south. Just no idle at all. :exp:

What is it?

My explorer seems to be doing the same thing. It is a 2002, and OCCAISONALLY, when I start it the idle will be really rough, and it wants to stall. Then the next time I start it, It runs fine. When the idle is rough, it sounds like it is missing, and there is black smoke. I was thinking of changing the plugs...48000 miles...and wires, and I am curious, what is an IAC? Maybe I should look at that too.

IAC - An electrically-operated valve which allows air to bypass the throttle plate in a fuel injected engine to regulate engine idle speed.

I would definatle have a look see.

Good luck ..........

thanks

thanks alot, I am finding a lot of info on here about it...gee, I never even knew the dam thing existed! LOL!

:us: I really wish I knew about this forum before I had the problem. I would have fixed it myself and saved a bundle. This board has solved many of my problems nad saved me some major dollars...

I'm having the same problem with mine, I've started off by cleaning the IAC and it didn't help. Next I'm going to try to replace it, does anyone know a good place to buy this cheap ? I've checked the web for prices and there around $95 - 125 for my 98xlt sohc. I've seem ppl mentioned they paid $35 for theirs, does anyone bought these and know of a good place?

I've checked on their website and it's $114, can I call them ?? I can't seem to find the phone number on their website.

$114 ouch

I would test the IAC solenoid if possible before dropping that scratch, you are jsut throwing $$$ at it, this does not fix things....usually you spend too much and still never find the real problem.
Diagnose, then spend ( I learned the hard way)

Don't feel bad. The dealer charged me a little over $400.00 to replace it..

Ouch... hope he kissed you first; it;s a 5 minute job to replace the IAC valve.

How do I test the solenoid ? just apply 12v ??

red wire is + other is likely grey with red and will be the ground and also reference voltage to the PCM.

I have never tested one but I have wired them up, so I thi=ink if you apply voltage to it, the solenoid should open. Anyone know the proceedure?

Most valves are simple open or closed, like the canister purge and other EVAC controls

Autozone - $46.99 w/ 3 mo warranty
Advance Auto Parts - $53.97 w/ 1 yr warranty
