I do extended oil changes on my 4.0L SOHC (5W30) and 5.0 V8's (10W30) using Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Extended Performance and I use extended performance oil filters too (Purolator Boss). It's supposed to be good for 12 months/12,000 miles, but I don't put that many miles on my trucks in a year, so for the most part I change the oil and filter once a year at around 5k-7K and around 10K in my daughter's 5.0L. Mobil 1 recently came out with a new extended performance oil (Annual Protection) that's supposed to be good for 15,000 miles/12 mths, but it's more expensive. The regular EP is around $25 a jug at Walmart and the new stuff was $49, but is now $39 for the jug.

I wouldn't pay the extra for that m1 annual protection. I have m1ep in now, but thinking going to m1hm after this because It won,t put that many miles on.

I agree. I don't plan on using the "Annual Performance" either. It might be different if I still drove 30k a year like I used to have to do.

I use mobil 1 Extended performance in all my cars. My 4.0L aerostar van is on a 15k mile oil change interval with a new filter at 7500 miles. The annual protection isn't worth it cause it cost twice as much for another 5K miles.

Why don't you use a filter like Mobil 1 ep filter and just change filter with the oil?

Money, I use a 2 quart filter on my van, donaldson, fleetguard make a filter that will go over 15k miles but I'm not paying for it. The mobil 1 301 filter is the cross for what should be on the van and it is about $15, I can get 2 wix filters for $12. I buy enough parts at O'Reilly's for the company trucks where I work, it covers the cost of the oil when I get the coupons in the mail. I could teach miser to Ebenezer Scrooge.

I used to use a Motorcraft filter and change it 1/2 through the interval, but that meant I had to buy and extra quart of oil to replace what was lost (plus the hassle of changing the filter) so I'd rather just buy the extended life filters. I think I paid $12 at Advance for my last Purolator Boss EP filter and I got the previous one on sale for $10. I also often buy from Advance on-line and use their discount codes, then pickup at the store to save money.

I don't know why the per-qt cost of M1 EP oil is so high, It's like $9 a qt at Walmart where the 5 qt jug is only $25, so I buy a 5 qt jug for top-off's between oil changes. $9 x 5 = $45 for 5 qts. That's nuts!

I don't know what those filter numbers cross to, the FL1A is the one I base my projects on. Amsoil makes a long life filter which is larger than the FL1A, I bought about six of them a while ago, for use later with new engines.

The filter is the key to extended changes, as is mentioned here a lot. Many high end oils can last as long as those best filters, find the best filter for your vehicle, and then choose the oil. I'm trying the cheap Amsoil right now for my oil eating truck, it's called OEM and $5 a quart. Their best oil is close to $9, and very worthy of any distance you can drive in one year(with best filters). Buy a better air filter, almost everything that makes oil black goes through the air filter.

The FLA1 oil filter is the SAE size filter (3/4" thread IIRC). Of the 7 Gen II Explorers/Mountaineers I've owned only the '97 Sport SOHC V6 used the FLA1 size filter. The other 6 all used the 22MM metric oil filter (FL820S). IDK if this indicates the majority of the Gen II's do not use the FLA1 oil filter.

The early V6 Explorers all used the FL1A, but near the end of the 2nd gens, Ford changed the filter block adapter, and then everything uses the metric FL820S. All 302 Explorers have a metric filter block adapter, both the small block adapter, and the large unit which optionally could be an oil cooler. Those all use that 22mm x 1.5 thread size, and the metric FL820S filter.

I've got a couple of Amsoil bypass filter mounts, which are made for those special bypass filters. Those come in three sizes, large/huge/massive and hold 2-4 quarts. Those are made to last 50k miles, and all tractor trailers use that to reach 500k+ miles before rebuilds. I plan to run lines from the engine to those adapters, with two filters, and likely end up needing eight quarts. But it'll be good for a year or 25k miles. The bypass filters are fine to go 50k or a couple of years, those run about $40 or more depending on which size. The little one may be close to two quarts.

Search at Walmart.com for Mobil 1 Filter 301A
This might have been covered in another thread I've not read, but RockAuto shows M1-210a (>$13 @ Walmart.com) as the filter for '02 4.0 and 4.6 Explorers. Does the 301a replace the M1-210a? At $10 its a better price....

Never mind, I think I figured it out. the 301a is a replacement for Josh's 1991 Aerostar Van 4.0--which is likely a SAE product. For some reason, Mobil (or at least Walmart) sells those extended performance filters 30% cheaper than the M1-210a's that are specified for the Explorers (at least since 1997 or so, with metric oil filter blocks).

My 99 SOHC takes the FL1A, I think the metric change came closer to 2001.

My old van makes me the odd guy out here. diesel filters online has the 210A for $7.99. I think the wix 51087 is a larger replacement.
