'94 XLT
We just bought a '94 XLT with under 85,000 miles on it and can purchase the 36,000/3 year extended warranty thru the Ford dealership. I need to let them know by Monday (preferably Saturday) on our decision. For $1,299 it covers everything and for $999 it covers just the powertrain. Has anyone else bought the warranty? If so did you have a good or bad experience on warranty coverage? The most important question is it worth buying? I'm trying to average the cost over 36 months and then it doesn't seem so bad. Does anyone know if there's anything on the Explorer that has a tendency to go out in the first 120,000 miles that is covered by this warranty? If it helps our Explorer has the automatic transmission, push button 4wd, automatic hubs, power everything & 4.0 V6. Thanks for any input you may have on this subject.

Extended warranties often easily pay for themselves; I recommend purchasing it.

Good luck.....

id say get it.. but make sure that they dont play that BS about something being normal wear and tear.. when you and everyone else really knows that its just crap.. namely.. the hubs, which are about due to go out. and the transmission, which might take a dumb within that 36k miles

Definitely get it if it's within your means. Your really gonna be glad you got it later on.

hmm, An A4LD Auto tranny and Locking hubs (1354 TC) all are known to have problems. So.... yes I would reccomend it

Thanks for all your input! It sounds like getting the extended warranty is a no-brainer and will talk it over with the wife. They allow payments on the full warranty with 20% down and 10 payments @ 0% interest but will probably just pay it off out of savings. The comment that was made about Ford saying that the repair was only from normal wear and tear and not a warranty issue is the only thing that worries me. My brother works at the Ford dealership parts department that I bought the Explorer from and will ask him more about this subject of "normal wear & tear" versus it being a warranty issue. Very impressed on the response on my very first post to this site...thanks again!!

Glad we can help, and Welcome to the site. Theres a lot of information on this board about anything you can think of dealing with Explorers, and as you have just done, if you have a question, post it up and im sure you'll get responces.

Welcome again!

I would anticipate any 94 Explorer to expect to have the tranny rebuilt around 100k or a lil over, expect to have the electronic shift 4x4 motor seize up as well as blow the auto hubs within the next 36k, but that is just based on problems I've had. For sure you could pay almost 3 grand in those repairs alone(at a dealer) anyone else agree?

If possible, try to find out what major maintenance the Ex has had done in the past 5,000-10,000 miles. I have a '94 Ex, sounds the same as the one you have, with 82,000 miles, and since February it has had about $2500 worth of work. (Brakes, engine head unit, transfer case, hubs, etc) The guy at the dealership said that it is very common for a '94 Ex to need to get all these things replaced around 80,000 miles, so ask your dealership about it. If these items have already been replaced, the warrantee would be a good suggestion, but not necessary. If these items have not been replaced yet, then I would say that warrantee would be necessary.
