2017 explorer platinum
Hi so we just left the dealership. We signed on a 2017 explorer platinum. It has 15600 km and we paid 39000 CAD for it. They offered us an extended warranty for 4400. 5 year 80k km. I said no thank you. The financial officer all but called me an idiot. From your experience did I make the right choice. We Pic the car up Friday and have until then to change our minds. I am good with cars. She tried scaring us buy saying it has lots of computers.

Yeah thanks. So like was saying the finance officer was trying to act like I'm dumb for not getting an extended warranty. I was just going to buy the Hyannis manual. I have sockets and ramps and Jack's lol. So I feel like the small stuff will be ok. My research said the annual maintenance on an explorer is about 700 dollars

Welcome.

Welcome!
I'm sure you are aware of the markup on vehicle warranties. Most Salesforce Folks get a chunk of it too. Regardless of their crying poor, those "Extras" can be negotiated.
When you go back for Ex. State you want a few things amended on warranty. 1-Time and mileage. 2- A written out version of What is covered, and What is not. Not just a salespitch of "Its all in the brochure". And DEMAND That a loaner vehicle will be provided for All Overnight repairs.
They will probably tell you to go jump in a lake, but it never hurts to ask. It's already 5 yrs old, so if they are offering a complete Bumper to Bumper warranty for 4400, it's not too bad a deal..

Thanks. So do you have an opinion on the extended warranty?
He’s welcoming you because you posted this question in the Newbie welcoming section. There’s friendly people on this forum. ;)
I’ve moved your thread to the proper section for your year and question.

My opinion, not a great deal.

Yes, anything can go wrong and you just need the right thing(s) (i.e. $$$) to go wrong to justify the warranty, but 5yrs/80k KM doesn’t seem like much for the cost.

I guess it depends if you think it’s a good deal or not and if you feel more comfortable with a warranty vs. having to ‘break out the checkbook’ for any unplanned repairs.

One other comment, make sure it’s an actual Ford ‘warranty’ and not a 3rd party.

For reference, according to all the records I have, I’ve paid less than 3500USD in repairs AND maintenance on my 14 Sport over 110k+ miles and 8+years, everything except for fuel.
Oil changes, filters, 2 sets of tires (those alone were ~$1k each set), rear brakes, spark plugs, trans/PTU/diff fluid changes, battery. The only ‘repair’ I’ve done is front control arms at about 100k miles. Oh, I did have 1 warranty item taken car of and that was air bag light. I’m guessing that would have been less than $500 repair.

Yeah that doesn't sound bad. I have a project car also. So far I changed all the hoses, coolant reservoir, radiator, fans, coil packs, sparkplug, tie rod ends, both sway bars, adjustable coilovers, and 4 out of the 5 pairs of rear control arms. The 5th pair a shop had to do because they had to be cut out. So if anything under the car breaks I think I'm ok. My plan was to just buy a shop manual for the explorer and wing it. The finance officer was trying to scare me into it, she kept saying, do you know how many computers a car like this has. She claims I'm the first to person to buy a platinum and refuse an extended warranty. I got 1 extended warranty quote last night from somewhere else it was half the price.

From this statement, You know enough to take care of most repairs. Had to laugh when Finance Girl said, "You know how many computers?"
Ummmmm... ONE? But I/m sure she was referring to the Thousand Sensores on these things. Get yourself a Decent OBDll Reader compatible with the FORSCAN Programs, Preferably a Laptop or Seperate Tablet to download all the FORSCAN Updates you will need, and when problems arise, you will be ready . (My wife has a 2019 EDGE, under warranty, r. high beam not working, Work ticket Charged us $$72 for bulb and install. STILL Didnt work. Showed the Service Manager my printout of the scan, with the codes, No power getting to R. Hi Beam. Trying to Cover his butt, started questioning me about the scan report, that I was NOT Authorised to run a scan on a Warrantied Vehicle. Told Him to Shut up and fix it by 5:00, or have my loaner car ready, I will be back at 5:30.. 4 days later it was done. Then while picking it up, Showed him the Recall Notice we just got in the mail. With steam coming out of his ears, said go to counter , set up a recall appt. Laughed all the way home.

Welcome to the Forum.
If you plan to keep the vehicle for any length of time I would strongly recommend an ESP with first day rental. I would not get from your dealer.
Check out some of these;

Peter

IMHO it depends on how complex the vehicle is & how mileage is on it to weather you purchase the extended warranty or not. When we purchased a 2021 Bronco Sport for my wife we purchased the extended warranty because that vehicle has sooooo much electronic stuff. Now on my 2005 F-150 I did not. After working in the automotive business for 26 years & seeing what warranties they sold if you are going to purchase an extended warranty get a Ford extended warranty.
