Hi guys,
I am the proud owner of a 2000 Ford Explorer Sport. However this weekend my locked driver side door would not open from the outside. It would also not open from the inside after I climbed in from the passenger side. The only way to open it now is to start driving and then viola it opens from the inside! This repeats every time the door is locked. It all started after I tried to close the door while holding the exterior handle in the up position as if I was trying to manually lock the door. Only problem is the door knob was in the open position and the door slammed against the car without closing. Could this action have damaged the return spring?
I did a search on this site and think it is the exterior door handle return spring that's broken. The handle feels very loose. I've removed the door panel and waterproofing and unbolted the window support track.
On a side note the power door features of both doors gradually stopped working about 1.5 years ago after I had worked on the car for a month or two and repeatedly opened the door with the key instead of the remote. I was forced to do this because the battery was disconnected so I could replace the carpet. I had actually just bought the car on EBay. The door lock was very stiff and sluggish to operate and only after forcing the key back and forth a few times was I able to open the car. Could this action be responsible for the remote mechanism to stop working for both doors? Now that the door is open I can see that the rod that's operated by the remote still moves up and down when the button is pressed but it simply fails to unlock the door. There must be a problem with all the linkages.
Does anyone know which parts I should be replacing to get the driver side exterior door handle to open the locked door and both remote mechanisms to work? I don't want to replace functioning components.
Thanks for reading.
