You don't have to replace the whole thing, just replace the top-it's like a small distributor cap, a Hall effect sensor about $30. Mine failed when spilled coolant found its way inside and shorted it out.

you people with emissions testing have it rough..

Ha ha emissions is pointless and on its way out. To give some more info it's a 4.0 Vin x ohv and it had a major head gasket leak and I replaced both and Lim gaskets. The thing that gets me is the light is not on. I may hook up the scan tool at work and clear the codes and see if it comes back.

he's probably talking about the other engine sohc, not xcode ohv.

your CEL bulb is prob burnt out. I concur, get hold of an OBD II scanner, and before you go to get it inspected, clear the code. Not that you should ignore it if it keeps coming up, but if the truck is running fine otherwise...

I cleared the code but it just comes right back. What's the easiest way to get to the cps make sure it's plugged in.

It's at the back of the block. About 2" around with 3 wire connector, B+, B-, center wire is the signal. Just take the 2 small screws out that hold the cap (sensor) on. You mess with the whole thing, it's like retiming a regular distributor but you'll need the alignment tool. If it were mine, I'd spring for the $22 and just replace it while you're hunched over the engine.

Don't reset the code with your scan tool, if you do you will have to wait for the engine to cycle several drive cycles before emissions test will pass. Once you replace the sensor the light will go out on next emissions drive cycle signaling code is cleared, and you're good to go.

Do I have to align it if I just replace cap?

Just replace the cap. 2 screws in 2 round holes line it up as well as secure it, orient the connector the same direction it came off.
