Failed factory wiring harness

I am a new member with a problem. My 2013 explorer came with a factory wiring harness for the trailer hitch. It has quit working in terms of the running lights although the turn and stop work fine. Using a knowledgeable friend and a multi-meter, we found no signal coming from the factory connector on the running lights. We also tried the wire leading to the running lights and found no voltage. There appear to be wires disappearing into the vehicle rather than a connection where I can just plug in a new section.

Any words of wisdom as to where the connection is? And how much stuff I have to disassemble to get to it>

Have you checked fuses? Owner's manual should help you locate where the panel is.
